  • Publication number: 20240098167
Abstract: Electronic devices may be provided with components such as displays and cameras. A display may be mounted in a housing. The housing may have a sidewall. A bent portion of the display may be embedded in epoxy that is separated from the sidewall by an air gap. Adhesive may attach the epoxy to the housing. A metal support that is chemically bonded to the epoxy may be welded to metal structures such as camera brackets and other metal supports. The housing may have a glass layer that forms a rear wall. The glass layer may have a protruding portion that forms a glass plateau with openings through which cameras operates. A camera may have a protruding portion that is received within one of the glass plateau openings. The protruding portion may extend into a metal camera trim in one of the openings that is attached to the glass plateau.

  • Patent number: 7387475
Abstract: Apparatus for positioning and holding a tool (3) relative to a workpiece (35) comprising a carriage (1) for conveying the tool over the surface of the workpiece (35) and means (7, 9, 11, 13) for holding the carriage (1) onto the surface of the workpiece (35), the holding means being selectively switchable between a low grip state in which the carriage (1) is held against the workpiece surface whilst remaining capable of movement relative thereto and a high grip state in which the carriage (1) is held substantially fixedly to the workpiece surface for the tool (3) in use to operate thereon. Such an arrangement provides a robot capable of “crawling” over a workpiece (35) and carrying out precise manufacturing operations thereon.

  • Patent number: 6646240
Abstract: A tool (38) secures and releases a fastening arrangement which includes a first component (10) and a second component (12) which may be releasably fastened together. Fastening is by means of a retention element (34) of shape memory material associated with the second component (12) which is reconfigurable between an open position (first and second components separated) and a closed position (first and second components fastened together). During fastening a closure element (36) urges the retention element (34) from its open position to its closed position. The tool includes a magnetic coil (44) energizable to urge the closure element (36) in a direction to cause the retention element (34) to move from its open to its closed state. The magnetic coil (44), or an additional coil, is also energizable to draw the closure element (36) away from engagement with the retention element (34). A heating coil (45) is provided for heating the retention element (34).

  • Patent number: 6472676
Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus and a method for accurately positioning tools for use in manufacturing or inspection operations whilst reducing the need for costly tooling such as jigs. The method for accurately positioning tools comprises at least the steps of projecting an image onto a surface, detecting the projected image, processing the projected image, calculating at least two dimensional co-ordinates of the projected image relative to a tool, and moving the tool so that it is positioned in a pre-defined spacial relationship with respect to the projected image.

  • Patent number: 6398450
Abstract: A fastening arrangement (14) comprises a shank (16) with a head (18) retained in a first component (10). The other end (25) of the shank is tapered or of other non-constant cross section and terminates in a domed portion (26). A second part of the fastening arrangement includes a collar (34) of shape memory metal material, which may be swaged to engage and retain the domed portion (26) by a magnetized pressure ring (36), which is applied by applying a strong magnetic field. To release the fastening, the pressure ring is released by the application of a magnetic field and the collar (34) is then heated so that it reverts to an open position.
