  • Patent number: 5979576
Abstract: An anti-whirl rotary drag bit including one or more cutters, wear knots or other support structures disposed on the flank of a bit profile in a normally cutter-devoid region of the profile adjacent the gage of the bit in the circumferential segment of the gage used as a bearing zone for the bit to ride against the side of the bore hole. Such flank cutters or other structures reduce wear of the bearing zone but, due to their placement, do not come into play except under certain drilling situations such as reaming or high rates of penetration wherein whirl tendencies resulting from cutting forces are not as pronounced.

  • Patent number: 5906245
Abstract: Mounting apparatus is described for locking an insertable stud cutter or slug cutter or fluid nozzle into a socket on a rotatable earth boring drill bit. The cutter may be readily removed and replaced without damaging either the cutter, nozzle or bit. Apparatus are shown for permitting or, alternatively, preventing rotation of the cutter or nozzle in its socket. The mounting apparatus is particularly applicable to cutters having a cutting disk of polycrystalline diamond or other superabrasive material mounted on a carbide supporting body, or carbide body nozzles or nozzles having a bore lined with such a material.

  • Patent number: 5497842
Abstract: A reaming apparatus for enlarging a borehole, including a tubular body having one or more longitudinally and generally radially extending blades circumferentially spaced thereabout. Each of the blades carries highly exposed cutting elements, on the order of fifty percent exposure, on its profile substantially all the way to the gage. At least one of the blades is a primary blade for cutting the full or drill diameter of the borehole, while one or more others of the blades may be secondary blades which extend a lesser radial distance from the body than the primary blade. A secondary blade initially shares a large portion of the cutting load with the primary blade while the borehole size is in transition between a smaller, pass through diameter and drill diameter. It functions to enhance the rapidity of the transition while balancing side reaction forces, and reduces vibration and borehole eccentricity.

  • Patent number: 5495899
Abstract: A multi-bladed reaming apparatus for enlarging a subterranean borehole, the apparatus having a tubular body with a plurality of longitudinally-extending, circumferentially-spaced, generally radially-extending blades carrying cutting elements, the blades being unequally spaced about the body. The cutting depth of the cutting elements on at least one of the blades is adjusted to modify the distribution of the depth of cut (DOC) among the cutting elements to substantially equalize the volume of formation material removed by the blades. Wear is reduced and the potential for premature failure of cutting elements on any single blade is alleviated.

  • Patent number: 5431239
Abstract: An improved stud design for an earth boring drill bit is disclosed preferably using materials of different hardness and toughness layered to provide maximum resistance to surface abrasion coupled with excellent structural properties including high strength with maximum fracture toughness. The bit body is conventionally attached to a drill string, and has a crown and gage portion. The studs preferably include a core, made of steel or other material having high fracture toughness, covered at least in part with a hard, abrasion resistant material such as tungsten carbide. Each stud is secured to a socket in the bit body by means of brazing or other suitable means such as a press fit. The cutting element is brazed to a mounting face of the stud prior to affixation of the stud to the bit body and is preferably comprised of a polycrystalline diamond compact adhered to a backing layer of tungsten carbide.

  • Patent number: 5373908
Abstract: A cutting structure for use in a rotary drag bit for downhole drilling is disclosed which relieves stress concentrations focused in the cutting structure along a line adjacent the surface where a cutting element abuts the carrier element or stud. A semicircular polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutting element segment and a cooperating blank segment are diametrically bonded together and, in turn, bonded to a surface on the carrier element. The PDC segment has a chamfer formed along one inner edge, and the blank segment similarly has a chamfer formed along one inner edge. The two segments are joined together along their chamfered edges so that the chamfers are aligned to form a channel through the cutting structure when the segments are bonded to the carrier element. A groove may also be formed in the carrier element along the line where the polycrystalline diamond cutting element, the blank segment and the carrier element are joined, either in addition to or in lieu of the chamfers.

  • Patent number: 5115873
Abstract: The present invention discloses an apparatus and method for directing drilling fluid to the cutting tip of a downhole drilling bit cutter by one or more flow channels formed in the upper section of the cutter's front surface, thereby maximizing the cleaning and cooling effect of the fluid flow on the actual cutting surface. Another embodiment of the present invention discloses an apparatus and method for helping to peel a rock chip from the face of a downhole drilling bit cutter while simultaneously cleaning and cooling the drill bit cutter cutting tip.

  • Patent number: 4848476
Abstract: A triple cone drill bit (10, 10A) comprising a plurality of conical roller cutters (16, 16A) having hard metal cutting elements thereon and being so positioned relative to each other that their rotational axes are offset from the rotational axis of the drill bit (10, 10A), and a drilling fluid nozzle system for directing a pressurized fluid stream (76, 76A) across certain of the cutting elements and thereafter against the formation generally at the bottom of the well bore so that when the drill bit (10, 10A) is used in its most advantageous areas, such as the soft, medium-soft and plastic formations, the nozzle system prevents "balling up" of the cutters and greatly increases the drilling efficiency of the bit. In one embodiment (FIGS. 15-20) the drill bit body (12A) has vertically extending recessed portions (21A) formed at the junctures (19A) of the lugs (15A) to provide flow passageways for the upward flow of drilling fluid and entrained cuttings.
