  • Patent number: 8656807
Abstract: A tuned damper for the input shaft on a rotary encoder includes a mounting plate and a mass plate having a plurality of mounting flanges each having mounting apertures. Fastening elements couple the mass plate to the mounting plate, and resilient elements or donuts each having a central aperture are positioned on either side of each mounting flange. The diameter of the fastening elements is smaller than the diameter of the mounting apertures and the holes in the resilient donuts so that the fastening elements do not touch the body of either the resilient elements or the mounting flange and the mass plate does not directly contact the mounting plate in order to isolate the mass plate from the mounting plate. The mass plate dampens torsional vibration which may exist in the input shaft of the encoder.

  • Patent number: 8022864
Abstract: Signal processing is used to detect transient signals in the presence of noise. Two embodiments are disclosed. In both embodiments, the time series from a remote sensor is broken into a number of short time series. The power spectrum of each short time series are then calculated along with the mean noise level. The moments of each peak in every power spectrum are calculated and the peak with the largest power selected from each power spectrum. A histogram of the moments from these selected peaks is generated and normalized to become a measured PDF. In addition, a pre-determined PDF is derived, in the same method as above, from theoretically calculated noise, numerically simulated noise, or measured noise. Comparison between the measured and pre-determined PDF's establish the detection of a transient signal. The first embodiment compares the area between the measured and pre-determined PDF's against a threshold to determine detection.

  • Publication number: 20110011199
Abstract: A tuned damped absorber arrangement is used to attenuate the response of an encoder. A vibration problem occurs on rotary axis heads which are used in machining operations. When using long slender tools, a vibration can be created which causes the encoder to lose its position. The device uses a tuned damped absorber that is attached to the input shaft of the encoder to dampen unwanted vibration.

  • Publication number: 20080231752
Abstract: A method for extracting a clear frame from an image frame containing at least one or more subjects disposed before a backing, whose color and luminance vary smoothly from one backing area to another. The method replaces a subject's pixel signal levels with backing pixel signal levels. The method selects a known backing pixel and compares the RGB signal levels of an adjacent pixel with the RGB signal levels of the known backing pixel and identifies the adjacent pixel as a backing pixel when its RGB signal levels are each within an assigned tolerance of the RGB signal levels of the known backing pixel. This comparison is performed on all known backing pixels with unidentified adjacent pixels until all pixels in the image frame have been examined and all backing pixels identified.
