  • Patent number: 6587588
Abstract: A progressive image display decoder and method of operation for wavelet encoded images achieves reduced memory storage requirements for wavelet transform coefficients and reduced execution time in displaying the image thereby overcoming the limitations of the prior art. Conveniently, a wavelet image format, typically DjVu IW44 facilitates progressive rendering and smooth scrolling of large color or gray level images with limited memory requirements. The progressive wavelet decoder is composed of two components. The first component decodes the incoming image data and updates an array of wavelet coefficients. The second component applies an inverse wavelet transform to the array of wavelet coefficients for the purpose of reconstructing the image. The operation of the first component (the decoder) is triggered by the incoming compressed image data. The received data is decoded and is used to apply updates to an array of wavelet coefficients.

  • Patent number: 6298165
Abstract: A method improves the efficiency of a compression technique by introducing a new parameter to be associated with a given probability range for events. When the new parameter is to be utilized, that parameter is associated with a table that matches codes to sequences of events. The coder receives the bit stream, detects a sequence of events and then reads the corresponding code from the table when the coder recognizes that the probability range with respect to the code corresponds to this new parameter. At the decoder the received bit stream is matched to table entries to determine the corresponding event sequence.

  • Patent number: 5936559
Abstract: A method provides for the interleaving of arithmetic codes with either other codes, non-coded data or other arithmetically coded data. A method provides for reserving portions of a data stream for the first arithmetically coded data and interspersing the second coded data amongst the portions of the data stream reserved for the first arithmetic coder.

  • Patent number: 5751859
Abstract: Bilevel textual images are compressed by segmenting the image into marks (401) and then coding each mark using a soft pattern matching method. Each mark is compared (403) with the marks in a library of marks and if an acceptable match is found (404), the index of the matching mark is coded (412). Each pixel in a current mark is then coded using a statistical coder that codes each pixel based on the value of the pixel and a set of probabilities of all sample values based on a context that consists of pixels in the current mark and pixels in the matching mark (414, 415, 416, 417). In order to reduce the overall bit count of the image, pixels which are poorly predicted (i.e., pixels black ?or white! in value, but whose context makes them more likely to be white ?or black!)) (705) are color-reversed (706, 709) prior to coding, if so doing will not perceptibly alter a reconstructed image (708).

  • Patent number: 5708431
Abstract: An integer of potentially unbounded size is compression coded by first transforming the integer into a binary representation in which the length of the sequence of bits representing the integer is self-contained within the sequence itself. Each of the bits within the sequence is then coded with a binary arithmetic coder, such as the QM-Coder, which uses as a conditioning context for each bit, the bits of the sequence previously coded. In order to limit the amount of memory used to store the probability information associated with each conditioning context, memory is allocated for storing such information as that conditioning context is needed. Also, once a predetermined amount of memory has been used to store this probability information for different conditioning contexts, no further memory space is allocated for newly occurring conditioning contexts. Rather a special overflow memory space is allocated and used for all conditioning contexts not previously defined.
