  • Patent number: 5992001
Abstract: A continuously cast strand is cut into elongated billets having ends and the billets are run through a rolling stand. after cutting the strand into billets and before rolling the billets one of the billets is engaged in the rolling stand and a trailing end of the one billet and a leading end of another billet are enclosed in a mold with the ends longitudinally spaced. This space between the ends is filled with molten metal in contact with the ends of the billets and the molten metal is hardened to interconnect the billet ends. Then the mold is removed from around the billet ends. The molten metal is of substantially the same composition as the billets. Furthermore the one billet is advanced in a travel direction by means of the stand and the mold and the other billet are advanced synchronously with the one billet after enclosing the billet ends in the mold. The mold is removed from the billet ends before the hardened metal between the billet ends enters the rolling stand.

  • Patent number: 5966977
Abstract: A method of rolling steel sections, particularly in a universal section mill, wherein X-shape rolling and H-shape rolling are carried out alternatingly and specifically directed cooling of the steel section is carried out during rolling. During roughing rolling in a X-shaped groove a cooling water channel is formed at each side of the steel section at the connecting locations between web and flange. The roll cooling water flowing off from the H-shaped rolls is concentrated in the cooling water channels. An additional quantity of water may be added either without pressure or in the form of spray water to the concentrated roll cooling water.

  • Patent number: 5904061
Abstract: A method of rolling finished sections from a preliminary section by initially carrying out five or more passes and reversing passes between a universal stand and a horizontal stand, wherein profiled horizontal rolls of the universal stand form in the section two indentations located opposite of each other and offset relative to a longitudinal center of the section. Subsequently, head and flange projections of an emerging rail section are preshaped and the indentations are laterally reduced by one of alternative grooves of a horizontal stand of a preliminary rolling group. The emerging rail section is rolled in a reversing operation after three or more passes in the universal stand and in two alternative grooves of an intermediate upsetting stand. The section is finish-rolled into a rail section in an additional pass through the universal stand.

  • Patent number: 5902422
Abstract: A method of coiling or placing bar steel or wire in coils, wherein the rolling stock is reeled from rolling heat in a basket or is placed by a coiler in the form of coils onto a conveyor and is collected at the end of the conveyor over a mandrel into a coil, wherein the rolling stock is cooled during coiling and the rolling stock is further cooled after the coiling process or the formation of coils. Cooling of the rolling stock from rolling heat prior to coiling into the transformation range characterized by the Ar.sub.3 line or Ar.sub.1 line of the transformation time-temperature diagram corresponding to the type of steel to be cooled is extended, such that, depending on the type of steel, the rolling stock is transformed immediately after cooling prior to, during or after coiling, uniformly over the entire length and entire cross-section thereof essentially isothermally from the austenite phase into the ferrite phase or pearlite phase and, as required, into the bainite phase.

  • Patent number: 5682785
Abstract: A roll mill and method for rolling wires or rolling stock having a round cross-section and made from high grade steel or other alloyed steel in a high production-light section/wire mill is disclosed. By the invention, the tightest wire tolerances to roll the rolling stock in a temper roll block of the roll mill with a distinctly lower pass reduction compared to the reduction passes performed in the finishing roll block of the wire mill is achieved. The wire mill comprises a break-down train comprising respectively several roll stands or roll units, at least one intermediate train with adjoining or subsequent finishing train, wherein the finishing train is, in particular, configured as the finishing roll block. A temper roll block, comprising at least two stands is disposed downstream of the finishing roll block, and a cooling path 13 and/or a temperature compensation device 14 is, if needed, disposed between the finishing roll block and the temper roll block.
