  • Patent number: 6668631
Abstract: A process is suggested for checking the catalyst performance in internal-combustion engines, in which by means of detected operating parameters of the internal-combustion engine similar operating conditions are determined. It is suggested to compute from a defined number of measured exhaust gas values during a similar operating condition a statistically backed average exhaust gas value and compare it with a permissible exhaust gas value stored for this operating condition, so that a defective catalyst is recognized in the event of a deviation of the actually determined exhaust gas value from the permissible exhaust gas value.

  • Patent number: 6523342
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and a corresponding system for catalytic aftertreatment of the exhaust gas of an internal-combustion engine. Two spatially separate catalyst devices are provided in the exhaust gas system. The first of these catalyst devices is arranged in a position close to the engine, and the second catalyst device is arranged in a position away from the engine. An exothermal reaction is caused to take place during warm-up for heating the second catalyst device.

  • Patent number: 6367320
Abstract: A process for monitoring the operation of a system for the aftertreatment of exhaust gas utilizes respective temperature sensors assigned to catalysts in the exhaust gas system. In addition, a sensor for detecting the NOx content in the exhaust gas is assigned to a reduction catalyst. The detected values, or functions thereof, are in each case compared with the definable reference values and when these definable limit values are exceeded, a corresponding defect information is triggered.

  • Patent number: 6113864
Abstract: A combination of an adsorbent with a catalyst for internal combustion engines. The adsorbent-catalyst combination is built up in two or more alternating layers of zones, which are coated to be adsorbing, and zones, which are coated to have catalytic activity, and are connected in series in relation to the flow of exhaust gas. The zones having adsorbing activity are to be designed thermodynamically so that they have a lesser heat transfer than the zones having catalytic activity, so that the zones having catalytic activity have a higher support temperature than the upstream zones having adsorbing activity.
