Patent number: 7349776Abstract: A vehicle control system has a plurality of subsystem controllers including an engine management system 28, a transmission controller 30, a steering controller 48, a brakes controller 62 and a suspension controller 82. These subsystem controllers are each operable in a plurality of subsystem modes, and are all connected to a vehicle mode controller 98 which controls the modes of operation of each of the subsystem controllers so as to provide a number of driving modes for the vehicle. Each of the modes corresponds to a particular driving condition or set of driving conditions, and in each mode each of the functions is set to the function in mode most appropriate to those conditions.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 2003Date of Patent: March 25, 2008Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventors: Anthony Francis Spillane, William Burdock, David Andrew Clare, Derek Leslie Jones, John Anthony Kellett, Jan Pieter Prins, Keith Gary Reginald Parsons, Paul Malcolm Darnell

Patent number: 6769399Abstract: A vehicle speed control system includes an engine control system with an engine idle speed controller which maintains the engine idle speed set point for varying engine torque outputs and a vehicle braking system for braking the vehicle and which is operated by a deceleration demand means. The idle speed controller is arranged to receive signals from the deceleration demand means such that any increase in engine torque output demanded by the idle speed controller to maintain idle speed is limited in response to signals received from the deceleration demand means.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 2002Date of Patent: August 3, 2004Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventor: Paul Malcolm Darnell

Patent number: 5961420Abstract: A vehicle transmission control system in which a central control unit issues signals to an associated main drive clutch actuator and to ratio actuating means to effect changes in the operative ratio of an associated transmission in accordance with a predetermined shift point map. When the shift point map indicates that a ratio shift is appropriate, the system tests for fluctuations in the position of the an associated engine accelerator pedal and only actions the shift if the degree of fluctuation of the accelerator pedal position is judged acceptable. The acceptable level of accelerator pedal fluctuation preferably varies with engine speed.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 1997Date of Patent: October 5, 1999Assignee: AP Kongsberg LimitedInventor: Paul Malcolm Darnell

Patent number: 5819585Abstract: A vehicle transmission having a main drive clutch (14), a multi-ratio gearbox (12), a gear engaging mechanism (25) for engaging the operative ratio of the gearbox, and a manually operable gear selector (24) allowing the operator to manually select the operative ratio of the gearbox when the transmission is acting in a manual mode. An electronic control unit (36) is also included which controls the disengagement and engagement of the drive clutch at start-up and halting of the associated vehicle and during gear changes and which controls the operation of the gear engaging mechanism (25) in response to movements of the gear selector (24). The electronic control unit (36) is also arranged to override the gear ratio currently selected by the operator to select a more appropriate gear ratio for the current conditions if a predetermined operating condition occurs when in its manual mode.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 1996Date of Patent: October 13, 1998Assignee: Kongsberg Techmatic UK LimitedInventor: Paul Malcolm Darnell
