  • Publication number: 20140223303
Abstract: Systems and methods are presented to facilitate caching of programming from broadcast and/or content streaming services to a user device for local playback. In addition, metadata can be provided to guide the user in selecting, caching, or playing the cachable content. In some exemplary embodiments, a receiver or other user device can automatically select the programming to be cached based on a user's historical topic interest and listening history. In some exemplary embodiments, the metadata can also include DRM information that can limit the ability of a user to playback the content, so as to comply, if necessary, with operative legal requirements related to usage of the content.

  • Publication number: 20140129016
Abstract: Systems and methods are presented for a broadcast or streamed content receiver to receive a plurality of program channels with defined banks of subset channels, to display the banks on the radio receiver, and to receive dynamic updates of both channels within the banks and the content of each such channel. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the channels in a given bank can be determined by commonality as to defined categories, user interest, user preferences, and/or content provider, or seasonal or other relevance. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, channels in one or more defined banks can be buffered to facilitate smart user scanning within such defined banks, or one or more banks can be used to generate a bank specific “TuneMix™” channel.

  • Publication number: 20140025839
Abstract: Systems and methods for increasing bandwidth for digital content delivery are presented. A content delivery method and system split a digitally encoded content file (e.g., song, television show, movie, podcast, or other audio or video content file) to be delivered to receivers into at least two files with a first file being stored at a receiver in advance of receiving the second file. The first file generally includes a majority of the information in the content file but is denatured and cannot be decoded by a receiver or media player to produce even a portion of the original content file without the second file. The second file includes information derived from the original content file that is not contained in the first file. Upon receiving the transmitted second file, a receiver combines and processes both files to recover the original content file wholly or substantially for playback.

  • Publication number: 20120028567
Abstract: A low cost DAB multichannel receiver comprising a simplified buffering method for buffering content segments from multiple streams contained within the DAB channel, where the receiver enables the listener to navigate buffered content segments from multiple streams within the DAB channel while enabling the broadcaster to control the timeshift of commercial content to the receiver output stream. The receiver's buffered content grows over time and is cleared when tuning away from the channel, thus encouraging listeners desiring to tune in to new content to instead navigate to new buffered segments. Broadcaster control of the listener experience may be enabled by setting content control fields which are observed in the broadcast by the multichannel receivers. Additional embodiments are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7505745
Abstract: An interoperable receiver adapted to receive signals in multiple SDARS bands. The advantageous operation is afforded by the design of the receiver by which an entire band consisting of multiple carriers is received at one time. In the illustrative embodiment, the invention further includes circuitry for simultaneously receiving first and second ensembles. The first ensemble including a first signal from a first source, a first signal from a second source and a first signal from a third source. The second ensemble including a second signal from the first source, a second signal from the second source and a second signal from the third source. In a preferred embodiment, the inventive receiver is adapted to receive and output audio signals along with data signals simultaneously.

  • Publication number: 20070098159
Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for deciphering recorded digital audio signals and using a smart card to pay for deciphering. Encrypted digital audio signals are recorded onto a recording medium, such as a compact disc or the like. When the user desires to listen to the recording, the encrypted recording is inserted into a player/recorder and a prepaid smart card is inserted into a smart card reader connected to the player/recorder. The smart card reader deducts a predetermined value from the card before allowing the player/recorder to decipher the encrypted recording, and record the deciphered audio onto a recording medium for playback.

  • Publication number: 20060280206
Abstract: A method and apparatus encode a source data stream via convolutional encoding. Plural encoded data streams are interleaved and transmitted on plural transmission channels. Data groups generated via convolutional encoding are interleaved via time-interleaving functions to disperse selected bits within puncture groups of the data groups, bits in between data groups, and bits in selected sets of data groups to facilitate reconstruction of the source data stream from at least a portion of the interleaved data stream received on at least one transmission channel. The time-interleaving functions are selected to facilitate reconstruction of the source data stream from one transmission channel following continuous blockage. Subsets of bits of puncture groups are selected to allow reconstruction of the source data stream from more than one of the transmission channels using a minimum number of subsets.
