  • Patent number: 9669466
Abstract: An improved spindle assembly for a Davenport® multi-axis screw machine is adapted to adequately hold one-inch round bar-stock in a collet against movement relative thereto attributable to machining operations performed on a cantilevered length of bar-stock held in and extending beyond the collet. The spindle assembly may permit the use of the screw machine on materials thought heretofore to be too difficult to machine on a screw machine. Cam surfaces on the inner spindle and collet may be coated with a low-friction material. A stress-relieving connection between the inner spindle and collet is provided.

  • Patent number: 6508095
Abstract: An improved end-working attachment (30) for a screw machine or a rotary transfer machine is particularly suited for use in rolling threads on a workpiece. The attachment broadly comprises: a slide base (31) having an axis (y-y); at least two members (32, 32) mounted on the slide base for sliding movement in a radial direction toward and away from the slide base axis; a tool, such as a thread die (33), on each member; an infeed mechanism (34) for selectively causing the slide members to move toward the slide base axis such that said tools will engage said workpiece; and a return mechanism (35) for urging the members to move away from the slide base axis.

  • Patent number: 5809855
Abstract: The body section of the holder carries at one side a shaving tool bit and work supporting roller, and is removably mounted at its opposite side on the slide section of the holder by a quick release pin, which is reciprocable in a bore in the slide section. A spring normally urges the inner end of the pin into an opening in the body section to prevent its removal from the slide section, but to permit limited floating movement of the body section relative to the slide section. The pin may be retracted manually to allow removal of the body section. The work supporting roller is also removably and adjustably mounted on the body section; and the slide section is adjustably supported on an adapter to be mounted thereby on a machine cross slide. Two sets of ball bearings are interposed between the body and slide sections to facilitate floating movement of the former on the latter.

  • Patent number: 5417095
Abstract: One end of a rotating workpiece is threaded by using a single threading roll having on one end thereof a plurality of annular threading ribs the diameters and/or pitches of which increase slightly and progressively from one end of the plurality to the other. Initially the roll is advanced diagonally toward the end of the work to be threaded until all of the threading ribs on the roll have penetrated the work only part way to the final depth of the desired thread, after which the roll is advanced parallel to the axis of the work for a predetermined distance. The tool is then retracted and the foregoing threading operation is repeated several times, but with the tool holder being advanced a slightly greater radial distance toward the work with each successive threading operation until the desired thread depth has been achieved.

  • Patent number: 5167136
Abstract: Each of the two, pivotal, roll supporting arms of a thread rolling attachment has therethrough adjacent the end thereof remote from its pivotal axis a bore in which one end of a cylindrical pattern roll supporting shaft is adjustably secured. The axis of the bore, and hence the axis of the shaft and the pattern roll mounted thereon, are inclined slightly to the pivotal axis of the roll supporting arm, so that the axis or rotation of the pattern roll will be inclined slightly to the axis of rotation of the stock which is to be engaged by the roll. The pattern roll is releasably attached to one end of the support shaft, and is drivingly connected to one end of an internal pin, which is mounted intermediate its ends for rotation in an axial bore which is formed through the support shaft. At its opposite end the pin is releasably connected to a roll gear to which rotation is imparted by the pin upon rotation of the pattern roll.

  • Patent number: 4924687
Abstract: An annular threading roll is releasably secured to one end of a support shaft by a ball detent which in its locking position seats at one side in a semi-spherically shaped recess that is formed in the inner peripheral surface of the roll, and which is engaged at its opposite side by an enlarged-diameter head formed on one end of an operating member that is mounted for limited axial movement in an axial bore in the shaft. The operating member is spring-loaded into a position in which its head engages the detent to keep the latter in its roll locking position, but the member can be pushed axially to a second position to remove its head from behind the detent which can then shift radially inwardly of the shaft to release the roll for axial movement off of the shaft.
