Patent number: 8833623Abstract: A bag, such as a backpack, having self-adjusting straps comprising a stretchable elastomeric strip and a reinforcing webbing strip. The self adjusting straps are coupled to the back panel only at the bottom of the panel such that the top portion of the straps, which engages a user's shoulders, is free from a fixed attachment to the back panel. Accordingly, the straps of the bag are configured to adjust according to the weight of the cargo placed within the bag, as well as to the size of the user, automatically and without the need for manual loosening or lengthening of a the shoulder strap.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 2010Date of Patent: September 16, 2014Assignee: Tumi, Inc.Inventor: Paul Scicluna

Patent number: 8752683Abstract: A piece of luggage including at least one section of a stiff shell material is provided. The at least one section of the stiff shell material defines a first face of the piece of luggage and has at least one corner. A portion of the at least one section has been removed to define at least one notch proximate the at least one corner. First and second edges of the at least one section adjacent the notch are folded inward relative an inner surface of the at least one section forming first and second sides. The first and second sides define second and third faces of the piece of luggage. The piece of luggage further includes at least one rigid corner piece secured to the first and second sides proximate the at least one notch.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 2011Date of Patent: June 17, 2014Assignee: Tumi, Inc.Inventor: Paul Scicluna

Patent number: 8628242Abstract: A foldable bag comprising a compartment for holding articles including first and second opposing body panels constructed of a foldable material and connected to each other along a pair of sides and a bottom bridging the pair of sides to define an open mouth formed opposite the bottom. The sides and the bottom of the compartment are foldable to collapse the compartment, and the compartment is maintained in the collapsed configuration in a variety of ways. In one embodiment, fastening straps can be provided proximate the mouth and extend outward beyond the sides to releasably engage fastening members on the first panel proximate the bottom. Alternatively, a reclosable flap member can be coupled to a panel and include a strap defining a retention loop, wherein the compartment is maintained in the collapsed configuration when the sides are disposed within the retention loop.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 2010Date of Patent: January 14, 2014Assignee: Tumi, Inc.Inventors: Josh Buller, Paul Scicluna

Patent number: 8479900Abstract: A bracket assembly for mounting to a piece of expandable luggage has a base, first and second sliding members, and a lever. The base has slots, and a plurality of recesses are located between the slots and have a substantially flat sidewall. When the lever is in a locked position, a coupling portion is positioned at least partially within one of the recesses, and the notch engages the sidewall preventing the lever and sliding members from moving parallel with the slot. When the lever is in an unlocked position, stopping pegs prevent the lever from rotating more than 180 degrees relative to the locked position, and the lever and sliding members are free to move relative to the base and translationally parallel with the slots. The lever and sliding members are moveable to and from a plurality of expansion positions.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 2011Date of Patent: July 9, 2013Assignee: Tumi, Inc.Inventor: Paul Scicluna

Publication number: 20050082131Abstract: Stabilizing means for a secondary bag carried on a wheeled luggage case is attached to the telescoping handle assembly of the case. The handle assembly has a single telescoping tube and a stabilizing arm or arms pivotally mounted on the outer section of the telescoping tube. When the handle assembly is withdrawn from the case, the stabilizing arm or arms are pivoted to a horizontal position. On retraction of the handle into the case, the arm or arms are pivoted to a position parallel to the tube section. In another embodiment, collar affixed to the outer section of the tube carries a pair of L-shape members, each with a leg extending downwardly and parallel to the tube section. The collar and L-shaped arms move with the outer tube section into and out of the luggage case.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 20, 2004Publication date: April 21, 2005Applicant: TUMI, INC.Inventors: Timm Fenton, Paul Scicluna, Alex Deng
