Abstract: In a method for determining, by means of an observing and recording measuring device the exact position of a movable member and/or for determining a corrective movement to be performed from a position of the member, a measuring device having a datum position is used. The method includes the steps of determining the position of the movable member and/or a required corrective movement thereof by moving the measuring device past the position of the movable member and determining a new position obtained through the corrective movement or, alternatively, re-determining the first mentioned position of the movable member by moving the measuring device a second time past the movable member in an opposite direction.

Abstract: A method for the identification of rolls, in particular big paper rolls, by means of a code attached to or marked on the end surface of the roll. The code comprises several characters located side by side and is read by a combined signal optical beam transmitter-receiver, preferably a laser device, scanning a restricted angle in a plane (8). The scanning is adjusted to extend slightly over the end limits of the code at its both ends and the scanning plane is turned until at least one scanning over the enire code (4) is obtained.

Abstract: An arrangement for selecting and feeding a wrapper from a storage unit to a big paper roll or the like. The storage unit comprises several wrapper rolls of different axial length and separate feeding means for each wrapper. The feeding means are in a substantially vertical line and there is a guiding unit for guiding the selected wrapper to a roll wrapping station. The feeding means operate as the main wrapper pulling and feeding devices of the arrangement. The guiding unit, which is provided with means for transversely cutting the wrapper passing therethrough, is movable mainly vertically and can be selectively positioned in front of any of the feeding means, preferably very close to them.

Abstract: A roll packaging arrangement for applying headers or corresponding package units on paper rolls or the like of different diameter. The arrangement comprises a storage unit for the headers and an application unit including press members. Each header size has its own movable storage level, onto which headers are placed in a certain position and which are movable from a storage position to a working position for delivering headers of a desired size. There is a transmission member provided with catch means for transmitting a header from a storage level in a working position to a press member of the application unit. The location of the headers on the storage levels and the operation of placing a header onto the press member guided on the basis of the position of the header edge, so that the header, irrespective of the size of the roll to be packed, is placed in its proper place at the end face of the roll.

Abstract: An arrangement for wrapping big web rolls. The arrangement comprises a support system for supporting and rotating a web roll and a frame surrounding the web roll and having means for leading a wrapper around the roll. The frame includes a guide strap and operating means for applying the strap on the mantle surface of the roll and for keeping the wrapper between the strap and the roll. The operating means has a support position, in which it supports a portion of the guide strap at a distance from the roll, thereby causing the guide strap to bend off at a certain point from the surface of the roll. For bringing the front end of the wrapper to follow the roll, the operating means can be moved around said roll. Whereby the bending-off point of the guide strap also moves around the roll and an increasing portion of the guide strap settles on the mantle surface of the roll to keep the wrapper closely thereon when rotating the roll during simultaneous feeding of wrapper thereto.
