    Abstract: A method of ultrasonically identifying vulnerable plaque includes gathering an intra-vascular ultrasound data signal. The intra-vascular ultrasound data signal is characterized as a function of relative amplitude and frequency to define a spectral slope associated with fibrotic tissue. Alternately, the intra-vascular ultrasound data signal is characterized as a mean power signal. Vulnerable plaque is then identified based upon the spectral slope and/or the mean power signal.
