  • Publication number: 20060102338
Abstract: An anchoring device for tool is disclosed that can be positioned downhole and used in casing. The anchoring device can have an architecture that supports installation by running downhole and into engagement with a recess formed in the casing. The anchoring device can support the use of weak materials such as plastic.

  • Publication number: 20060096785
Abstract: A bit has been invented that is expandable from a collapsed position, useful for tripping, to an radially expanded position for use. The bit is useful to form a borehole through an earthen formation. In one embodiment, the bit can be used alone, without a separate under reamer, to expand a well bore below a casing string, either during casing drilling or when extending a well bore below an installed casing string. The bit cutter face includes a center cutter face on a mandrel and an outer cutter face mounted on an expandable section of a housing disposed about the mandrel. The outer cutter face can be expanded by axial movement of the mandrel within the housing.

  • Publication number: 20060037784
Abstract: A valve (30), a drill string valve assembly (10) and a method of drilling using compressed fluid as a drill drilling fluid are described. The valve and valve assembly (10) may be used in order to prevent escape of compressed fluid during the time that a connection is being made into the drill string. The valve (10) can be insertable into a drill string inner diameter to seal against fluid passage past the body except through the valve (30) and can be selected to maintain fluid pressure in the drill string when the upper end of the drill string is open to atmosphere. The valve can also be capable of being releasably engaged to a drive mechanism, such as a top drive (40) which is handling the drill string (12) to be slidably moved within the drill string, as driven by the drive mechanism, but releasable from the drive mechanism, when the drive mechanism is removed from the drill string.

  • Publication number: 20050023000
Abstract: A cement float for use in a wellbore tubing string includes: a mandrel including a first end, a second end, a bore extending from the first end to the second end including a fluid flow control device therein and outer side surfaces defining a tapering outer diameter from the first end of the mandrel to the second end; an outer lock sleeve including an outer surface and a sleeve bore through the sleeve, the outer lock sleeve retained at least about the outer side surfaces of the mandrel with the mandrel extending through the sleeve bore, the sleeve bore having a taper to complement and be coactable with the tapering outer diameter of the mandrel outer side surfaces and the sleeve bore and the mandrel outer side surfaces defining interfacing surfaces therebetween, the sleeve being expandable radially outwardly by driving the mandrel against the taper of the sleeve bore to place the cement float in an anchored position in the tubing string with the outer lock sleeve wedged between the mandrel and the tubing stri

  • Patent number: 5433279
Abstract: The assembly is designed to convert a conventional land rig to "top drive". It comprises a torque track that is shipped in sections and is assembled to form a rigid track extending vertically in the derrick. The track is rigidly attached to the derrick only at its base, so that the track is free to twist and deflect laterally along its length. The housing of the top drive is connected by an angled, pivotally mounted link means with a tubular bushing that embraces and slides along the track. The link means and bushing are adapted to restrain rotation of the housing relative to the track, while transmitting both side and torque reactive loads to the track. The angled pivoting link enables the top drive to be displaced outwardly to a position over the mousehole. The top drive incorporates a hydraulic motor and gear drive assembly for rotating a drive shaft connecting the drill string and hoisting means. The housing does not carry the drill string load and can be made lighter and more compact as a result.
