  • Patent number: 8708667
Abstract: A fuel pump assembly for a fuel injection system comprises a drive shaft, at least two pump heads each of which is axially displaced along the drive shaft, each pump head having a respective plunger for pressurising fuel within a respective pump chamber, and at least two cams provided on the drive shaft, each of which is associated with a respective one of the pump heads. Adjacent pump heads are offset angularly from one another by an amount sufficient to allow a region of overlap, in an axial direction along the drive shaft, between the adjacent pump heads.

  • Patent number: 6394762
Abstract: A fuel pump comprising a first pumping plunger reciprocable within a first bore and defining, with the first bore, a first pumping chamber. A second pumping plunger is reciprocable within a second bore and defines, with the second bore, a second pumping chamber. The fuel pump further comprises a supply passage, whereby fuel from the first pumping chamber is supplied to the second pumping chamber. A drive arrangement is provided for driving the first and second pumping plungers in both an extending direction and a retracting direction such that when the drive arrangement drives the first pumping plunger in its retracting direction, the second pumping plunger is driven in its extending direction to expel fuel from the second pumping chamber, and when the drive arrangement drives the first pumping plunger in its extending direction, the second pumping plunger is driven in its retracting direction and fuel is expelled from the first pumping chamber through the supply passage to the second pumping chamber.

  • Patent number: 6302659
Abstract: A multi-chamber positive displacement pump comprises a unitary housing in which is formed a plurality of cylinders. A pumping plunger is slidably mounted in each cylinder to define a pumping chamber. Means are provided for reciprocating the pumping plungers in order cyclically to vary the volume of the pumping chambers to effect delivery of a pumped fluid from the pumping chambers. A delivery passage is connected to each of the pumping chambers to receive pumped fluid therefrom, the delivery passage comprising at least one gallery formed in the unitary housing and open to an end face of the housing and passageways which extend through the unitary housing from the galleries to the pumping chambers. The galleries are closed by an end plate which is secured to the unitary housing. Feed passages and working fluid passages may likewise be defined by combination of galleries in the end face and passageways in the unitary housing.

  • Patent number: 5746180
Abstract: A fuel supply apparatus for supplying fuel to a compression ignition engine comprising a rotary distributor member having a delivery passage which can register in turn with outlet ports connected to the injection nozzles of the engine. Fuel is supplied to the delivery passage from an accumulator under the control of a valve. The accumulator is charged with fuel by means of a high pressure pump which is a cam actuated pump and fuel is supplied to the high pressure pump by a low pressure pump. A valve is provided to control the output pressure of the low pressure pump so that the amount of fuel supplied to the high pressure pump can be varied for the purpose of controlling the fuel pressure within the accumulator. This pressure is sensed by a transducer which supplies a signal to a control system which controls the flow of electric current in the valve.

  • Patent number: 5666921
Abstract: A fuel supply apparatus is disclosed which includes a distributor comprising a distributor member rotatable within a bore provided in a sleeve. The sleeve is provided with a plurality of feed ports and a plurality of delivery ports, fewer feed ports being provided than delivery ports. The distributor member is provided with a delivery passage registrable with the delivery ports, in turn, and a plurality of feed passages registrable with the feed ports. The feed and delivery passages communicate with one another. The feed and delivery passages are located so that when the delivery passage registers with one of the delivery ports, one or more of the feed passages register with respective feed ports.
