  • Patent number: 8077155
Abstract: A notebook computer is upgraded by providing stylus-cooperating indicia near the keyboard and an optical stylus that can recognize the indicia. The indicia includes a sketch pad area that cooperates with the optical stylus to transmit movement data to the computer. The movement data is relative in position and absolute in orientation, providing .DELTA.X and .DELTA.Y in the sketch pad's coordinate plane rather than the stylus's. Other indicia represents tool buttons recognized by both humans and the stylus. A stylus and stickers kit is used to upgraded existing notebook computers. New ones can be manufactured with the stylus-cooperating indicia in place or the indicia may be provided on a substrate that may be attached to any notebook computer, as selected and positioned by the end user. The stickers or substrate is thin enough to permit the notebook computer to be closed as usual.

  • Patent number: 7210996
Abstract: A questionnaire about a predefined topic is presented to the user of a computer, either via software or over a network. The questionnaire includes suggestions for clues or words of a word puzzle, such as a crossword puzzle or word search puzzle. The user need only answer a few of the questions. The user may also modify the questions and add new ones. When the user presses a button, the computer presents a custom word puzzle based on the questions and answers. The user is presented with a choice of background pictures also related to the topic, and the option to purchase various grades of the custom puzzle. A private webmaster's configuration area makes it easy to make this questionnaire and puzzle maker available from any website. It also makes it easy to customize the questionnaire, pictures offered and other matters according to the website.

  • Patent number: 6802041
Abstract: A word processor optimized for students taking notes automatically opens the correct document for each course according to a class schedule. It makes digital audio or video recordings of classes and establishes various kinds of links between the notes being taken and the point in the recording at the time the notes were taken. A special microphone is optimized for distance and reduced interference. After permitting the word processor to break the silence, any incomplete notes can be completed by using the links to quickly find the portion of the recording relevant to the incomplete notes. The search is improved by providing configurable preplay times based on the type of link and by playing back the recording at increased speed with pitch correction. Transcription of part of the recording is facilitated by playing this part in a series of short overlapping segments and transcribing each segment before playing the next.

  • Patent number: 5667438
Abstract: A software crossword puzzle design tool is provided. It provides a menu-driven user interface with various editing functions allowing the user to specify details of the crossword puzzle desired, such as the size, pattern, and inclusion of certain theme words. The unsolved puzzle is constructed automatically by a computer assigning letters to cells one cell at a time. After each assignment, the affected wordslots are compared to a lexicon of words to determine what letters of the alphabet may potentially be assigned to each of the remaining unassigned cells. If any unassigned cell becomes unassignable, some assignments must be reversed and others tried. Special data structures for the lexicon and fast methods of accessing the lexicon are disclosed. Clues can be assigned to the puzzle automatically or manually, and then the unsolved puzzle can be printed.

  • Patent number: 5479506
Abstract: A game apparatus including a puzzle and a conforming device. The puzzle includes ciphertext indicia and a number of designated spaces corresponding with the ciphertext for displaying a developing solution. The ciphertext is a message encrypted according to some substitutional and/or transpositional encipherment scheme. At each stage of solving, the ciphertext and developing solution show what has been correctly solved and what remains to be solved. The conforming device verifies the correctness of correct guesses and corrects incorrect guesses without prejudicing future guesses. There are manifold types of messages, encipherment schemes, developing solutions and conforming devices. Some puzzles and conforming devices are made by a computerized method. The game can be played by one player or several players in competition. It can be played using a game board or other apparatus or by using a computer with an interactive computer program. To solve a puzzle, a puzzle solver first forms a guess-pair.
