Patent number: 9537919Abstract: A proxy apparatus and method for streaming media information via at least one network and for building-up a good quality version of the media information are provided. When a user device communicates with the proxy apparatus using a particular bandwidth and requests that media information be provided, the proxy apparatus first determines if a version of the media information encoded for the user device's connection bandwidth has been stored in the proxy apparatus. If a version of the media information encoded for the user device's bandwidth is not available from the proxy apparatus, the proxy apparatus sends a request to a media server for the media information. If the version of the media information has missing packets, the proxy device sends retransmission requests to the media server to obtain the missing packets, thereby building-up a good quality version of the media information.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 2013Date of Patent: January 3, 2017Assignee: AT&T INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY II, L.P.Inventors: Robert E. Markowitz, Joseph T. O'Neil, Kenneth H. Rosen, Peter H. Stuntebeck

Patent number: 6606323Abstract: Enhanced performance of a WAN is achieved by allowing devices to move from LAN to LAN and have the move be transparent to end user applications. This is accomplished by allowing devices to move, with no action being taken in response to a move. Instead, notice is taken of the LANE Emulation Client (LEC) address at which a device can be reached when the device that moved chooses to communicate with some other device. In such a device initiates communication, a table is updated in a LAN Emulation Server (LES), which is an entity maintained by the WAN that interconnects a number of LECs. A similar table is maintained in each LEC, and the table of each LEC is updated whenever a connection is made between one of its devices and some other device. At times, of course, a LEC would have an incorrect address of a sought destination device. In such a case, the LEC sends a query to the LES, and the LES provides what the LES believes to be the correct LEC address.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1998Date of Patent: August 12, 2003Assignee: AT&T Corp.Inventors: Ram S. Patent number: 6446114Abstract: A method and system for consolidating multiple mailboxes into a single universal mailbox. The system comprises an agent, a user database, an application database and a mail repository. The agent searches a user database to determine the list of messaging systems the user subscribes to. The agent then recalls from the application database the procedures for accessing the messaging systems and logs onto each messaging system in turn to retrieve any new messages. The agent notifies the user of new messages according to a predefined notification method.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 2000Date of Patent: September 3, 2002Assignee: AT&T Corp.Inventors: Andrew Frederick Bulfer, Bruce Lowell Hanson, Robert F. Patent number: 6408065Abstract: An intelligent data network call setup system forwards data network user information to an operator, for example, for a call with a data network user. The intelligent data network call set up system monitors the data network user's actions and generates information that summarizes potential reasons for the data network user's call and forwards such information as preamble information to the operator. The intelligent data network call set up system includes a call coordination device that serves as an interface between the data network user and the operator. The call coordination device supports web sites visited by data network users and when a request for a call is received, the call coordination device provides the operator with the user's action history, and other helpful information to the operator such as products that may interest the user to avoid the undesirable “cold start” experience. In this way, the operator may be more knowledgeable and helpful to the user.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 2001Date of Patent: June 18, 2002Assignee: AT&T CorpInventors: Joseph Thomas O'Neil, Kenneth H. Patent number: 6339644Abstract: An intelligent data network call spawning system monitors a subscriber's interactions on a data network and spawns a call to an information provider. The intelligent data network call set up system monitors the data network user's navigational actions and analyzes the actions with an expert system, for example. The system spawns a call to an information provider based on these actions. The intelligent data network call spawning system includes a call spawning device that serves as an interface between the subscriber and the information provider. The call spawning device supports web sites visited by subscribers and spawns calls to information providers and may coordinate with a call coordination device to provide preamble information to a called party so that the called party is briefed regarding the subject matter of interest to the subscriber.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 1998Date of Patent: January 15, 2002Assignee: AT&T Corp.Inventors: Joseph Thomas O'Neil, Kenneth H. Publication number: 20010048737Abstract: A method and apparatus providing a communication service in which sponsors pay for communication services initiated by a caller. A caller may invoke the service by entering only the telephone number identifying the desired connection. A communication switch interprets the digits entered by the caller, determines whether the caller wishes to invoke the advertiser supported communication service and if so plays a message to the caller. At the end of the message the communication switch completes the desired connection.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 23, 1998Publication date: December 6, 2001Inventors: RANDY G. Patent number: 6157841Abstract: A cellular phone network provides location-based information to a user of a cellular phone. The cellular phone network includes a plurality of antennas coupled to at least one server. The server is coupled to a database. Stored on the database is a plurality of location-based information that is indexed to the plurality of antennas. The cellular phone transmits communication signals to one of the antennas. A phone call is established between the server and the user, and the server receives an identification of the antenna that the user transmits to. The server then queries the database and retrieves information local to the user. This information is then presented to the user in the form of menus.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1997Date of Patent: December 5, 2000Assignee: AT&T Corp.Inventors: Raymond L. Bolduc, Kenneth H. Patent number: 6075571Abstract: A network-based device creates composite video streams containing video images of users for display on video conferencing screens. Video image streams are cascaded through a series of quad boxes to create combined video streams and ultimately the composite video stream. The composite video stream produces a display grid comprised of a plurality of image boxes. The device uses quad box input port mapping to direct a specific video image stream to a specific image box by controlling the cascade path of each video image stream through the quad boxes in creating the composite video stream. A user interface permits a user to selectively determine the layout of user images on the video conferencing screen. Screen layout extends to size of each user image being incrementally controlled and location of each user image being selectively determined depending upon the size and the number of the various user images.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 1997Date of Patent: June 13, 2000Inventors: Ashok K.
