Publication number: 20160161153Abstract: A screw compressor includes a screw compressor rotor (32). The rotor (32) includes a helical flute (36) extending outwardly from a rotor axis (38). A compressor housing (34) surrounds the rotor (32) and including a suction port (40) and a discharge port (42). The housing (34) has an inner housing wall (46) abutting the rotor (32) and an outer housing wall (50) forming an exterior of the compressor. A housing pocket (44) is located between the outer housing wall (50) and the inner housing wall (46). An economizer port (30) extends from the housing pocket (44) through the inner housing wall (46) to direct a flow of gaseous refrigerant into the compressor.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 30, 2014Publication date: June 9, 2016Inventor: Peter J. Patent number: 8459963Abstract: A slide valve for use in a screw compressor comprises a main body portion configured for sliding in a pressure pocket of a screw compressor to regulate output of a working matter through screw rotors of the compressor. The main body of the slide valve includes a plurality of walls that define an enclosed interior cavity. The slide valve also includes a bore extending into a wall of the main body such that working matter discharged from the screw rotors has access to the enclosed interior cavity. The bore is sized to dampen pressure pulsations in the discharged working matter as the discharged working matter flows through the bore.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 2007Date of Patent: June 11, 2013Assignee: Carrier CorporationInventor: Peter J. Pileski

Patent number: 8317494Abstract: A compressor (20) has a housing (22) having first (52) and second (48) members. A motor (24) within the housing (22) is coupled to one or more working elements (26, 28) to drive the one or more working elements (26, 28) to compress a fluid. A number of electrical terminals (104) are each mounted in an associated aperture (132) in the second housing member (48) and electrically connected to the motor (24).Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 2005Date of Patent: November 27, 2012Assignee: Carrier CorporationInventors: Peter J. Pileski, Bruce A. Fraser

Patent number: 8272846Abstract: Various embodiments of the invention provide a screw compressor for compressing a refrigerant in a refrigeration system. The screw compressor includes a rotor case, which accommodates a primary helical rotor that is intermeshed with at least one secondary helical rotor, to compress the refrigerant in the rotor case. The rotor case also includes a slide valve supporting member that is fixed on an inner wall of the rotor case. Moreover, a slide valve, located in the rotor case, slides axially on the slide valve supporting member. The slide valve controls the volume of refrigerant during compression. The slide valve is fitted with at least one internal pressure relief valve, to relieve internal pressure in the screw compressor.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 2006Date of Patent: September 25, 2012Assignee: Carrier CorporationInventors: Paul J. Flanigan, Peter J. Pileski

Publication number: 20120093665Abstract: A compressor, as well as a lightweight and strong casting for a compressor, are disclosed. The compressor, which may be a reciprocating compressor for use in compressing high-pressure refrigerants such as CO2, includes substantially reduced wall thicknesses (t) compared to prior art castings. The side walls of the compressor can be manufactured to such reduced thicknesses (t) through the use of a bridge spanning across the crankcase. This not only allows the opposing side walls to be manufactured of a thinner material, but the bottom cover removably mounted to the crankcase can be manufactured from a thinner and lighter material as well. Through the use of such a bridge, the resulting compressor is not only able to satisfy current strength requirements, but at significant weight, size and cost savings as well.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 25, 2010Publication date: April 19, 2012Inventors: Paul J. Flanigan, Peter J. Pileski, Amit Vaidya
