Patent number: 4973324Abstract: An ostomy coupling has a first channel shaped element for attachment to an ostomy bag and a second element for attachment to a pad of medical grade adhesive. Each of these elements surrounds a stomal orifice. The second element is made into parts. The first attaches to the pad and the second is slidable axially relative to the first part. Moreover, the second part has a flange under which fingers can be placed when joining the elements to substantially prevent the application of pressure to the peristomal area.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 1989Date of Patent: November 27, 1990Assignee: E. Patent number: 4964856Abstract: An outlet pipe or tap is secured to a liquid containing bag by trapping the bag outlet region between inner and outer nested funnels. A leak proof seal is provided by disposing an O-ring sealing means between the funnels and moving one funnel axially relative to the other.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 1989Date of Patent: October 23, 1990Assignee: E. Patent number: 4963136Abstract: An ostomy coupling has two co-operating coupling elements. One is for attachment to a medical grade adhesive and the other is for attachment to an ostomy pouch. Each element is of close loop form and includes a tapering member extending around a stomal orifice. Each such member tapers in a radially outward direction and has a flat surface located in a plane at right angles to the coupling axis. The coupling also has a means of clamping which can be tightened onto the tapering members to hold them together. When held their respective flat surfaces are in face-to-face arrangement. Hence, two coupling elements can be held together and released without the application of any axial pressure forces or pulling forces to the wearer of the ostomy appliance.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1989Date of Patent: October 16, 1990Assignee: E. R. Squibb & Sons, Inc.Inventors: Peter L. Steer, Neil P. Wiltshire

Patent number: 4950261Abstract: An ostomy coupling has a pair of coupling rings. The body side ring has a flange attached to a medical grade adhesive pad and a chute wall surrounding a stomal aperture. The bag side ring has a rib member and a seal strip. To provide easy disengagement, the bag side ring has an integral flexible latching arm having a hook portion positioned to engage under a hook flange on the body side ring when the rings are coupled. The hook portion is disengagable from the hook flange by a lifting movement of the latching arm.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 1988Date of Patent: August 21, 1990Assignee: E. R. Patent number: 4940461Abstract: A three part filter is provided for attachment to an ostomy bag. One part includes a synthetic plastics base member having a central aperture and one flat surface whereby the filter can be attached to the bag wall. There are two walls upstanding from the other side of the base member to define a channel. The inner wall defines a shallow recess. The second part is a pad of filtering medium. The third part is a lid member of synthetic plastics material, with apertures through its top wall; the lid being a snug push fit within the channel. With this arrangement the lid member is readily removable to allow replacement of the filter pad.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 1988Date of Patent: July 10, 1990Assignee: E. R. Squibb & Sons, Inc.Inventor: Peter L. Steer

Patent number: 4931045Abstract: A two-part ostomy coupling has a first part which is a flat annulus having inner and outer peripheral walls. With the annulus these walls define a shallow channel. The coupling has a second part formed by a second flat annulus with radially inner and outer rims formed by respective flexible peripheral elements of plastics material. The first and second parts are constructed so that the second part is a push fit into the shallow channel defined by the first part. An annular member having a flexible resilient strip extending inwardly from its radially inner edge and an element extending from its radially outer edge which can engage under a rim portion of the said outer peripheral wall. Alternatively, the second part may be an annular member having a flexible resilient strip extending outwardly from its radially outer edge and an element extending from its radially inner edge which can engage under a rim portion of the said inner peripheral wall.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 1988Date of Patent: June 5, 1990Assignee: E. Patent number: 4925216Abstract: Apparatus for attaching a catheter to a bag includes a pair of coupling rings for trapping a part of the bag wall between them. A cutter having a blade of circular or closed loop form makes a cut in the trapped wall and an elastomeric member for gripping a catheter is connectable to the cutter or to one of the rings. The catheter is inserted in the elastomeric member and through the rings, the member serving as a gaiter.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1988Date of Patent: May 15, 1990Assignee: E. R. Patent number: 4917692Abstract: A faecal incontinence bag having flexible front and rear walls secured together around their periphery. The front wall has a hole therein for entry of matter discharged by the wearer. The hole is surrounded by an adhesive pad of skin-compatible water-resistant material secured to the external surface of the front wall surrounding the hole. The pad is generally heart-shaped so that when in position on the wearer the concave portion of the heart-shaped pad is towards the front of the wearer.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 1987Date of Patent: April 17, 1990Assignee: E. R. Squibb and Sons, Inc.Inventors: Peter L. Steer, Ronald A. Plass

Patent number: 4892530Abstract: An ostomy appliance intended for attachment to a peristomal area of a wearer includes a pad of medical-grade skin-attachable adhesive material, a first coupling element secured thereto, the element having a medically-extending flange attached to a surface of the pad and an upstanding rib of closed loop form constructed to couple with a couterpart (second) coupling element on a bag or pouch. An inner chute member is located radially within and adjacent to the first coupling element, the chute member having a substantially cylindrical wall covering the whole of the radially inner surface of the first coupling element. At one of its ends, the chute has a radially outwardly extending flange positioned so that it traps the chute member in position when the two coupling elements are coupled together.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 1987Date of Patent: January 9, 1990Assignee: Edward Weck IncorporatedInventor: Peter L. Patent number: 4890608Abstract: An attachment assembly is disclosed for attaching an article such as a wound cover or a prosthesis to human skin. The article attached may be, for example, a cover or dressing over a wound or a fistula or other lesion, it may be an eye patch or a breast prosthesis for use after masectomy or it may be a pouch to cover the genital region. The attachment assembly comprises a body-attachable pad of skin-compatible adhesive material and a series of double-sided adhesive layers thereon, which layers are constructed and arranged to be manually peeled off one-by-one when desired in order to expose a fresh adhesive surface to which the article is then attached.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1986Date of Patent: January 2, 1990Assignee: E. Patent number: 4876788Abstract: A synthetic plastic bag for containing liquids, e.g., urine, has a plastic outlet tube. It is manufactured by a first step of seam welding the tube between two superposed bag walls. In a subsequent step, an encircling sleeve is slid over the tube to a position where it contains within it the portions of the bag walls on either side of the tube. Thirdly, this sleeve is compressed onto the tube by a crimping operation conducted with the crimping force applied in a direction substantially parallel to the plane in which the bag walls lie. The tube may be part of a tap or other outlet fitting such as a push-pull tap.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 1988Date of Patent: October 31, 1989Assignee: E. R. Squibb and Sons, Inc.Inventors: Peter L.
