  • Patent number: 5928397
Abstract: A method to produce fused quartz particulates from quartz sand is disclosed employing continuous withdrawal of the molten material from a furnace apparatus. The molten material is rapidly cooled as withdrawn causing thermal fracture which is followed by mechanically pulverizing the fragments to a desired particle size.

  • Patent number: 5316854
Abstract: An ultraviolet radiation absorbing coating comprising cerium oxide in an inorganic oxide matrix formed by the hydrolysis and condensation of alkoxysilane and/or other metal alkoxide or oxide which has a higher absorbance per unit thickness of coating by virtue of its much higher concentration of colloidal particles in said matrix and a reduced tendency to craze when exposed to temperatures in excess of 1000.degree. C. and/or temperature cycling between ambient temperature and 1000.degree. C. by virtue of heating a coated article at elevated temperature between 500.degree. C. and 1100.degree. C. before cooling the coated article.

  • Patent number: 5308446
Abstract: A composite fused quartz material is disclosed for processing semiconductor grade silicon material in an improved manner. The modified vitreous material includes a disperse phase of fine size silicon metal particles which are distributed in preselected regions of the fused quartz matrix as a means of exercising temperature control in the various semiconductor processing operations using these fused quartz parts. Such utilization of the modified vitreous material in single crystal silicon rod growth and production of semiconductor grade silicon by diffusion doping is described. A method to produce the modified vitreous material is also disclosed.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 7, 1990
Date of Patent: May 3, 1994
Inventors: Peter P. Bihuniak, Gordon E. Dogunke, Robert D. Shelley

  • Patent number: 4304583
Abstract: Optical waveguide preforms and other glass articles produced by gas-drying and consolidating porous glass soot preforms are provided utilizing a consolidation method wherein consolidation proceeds from the drying gas inlet to the drying gas outlet end of the preform, this method resulting in more uniform water attenuation characteristics in the articles.

  • Patent number: 4203553
Abstract: An elongated burner, which produces a stream of metal oxide soot, comprises three adjacent housings. A centrally disposed housing contains a linear array of orifices for issuing a gas-oxygen mixture to produce a linear flame. Disposed on opposite sides of the central housing are two housings having orifices for issuing into the flame two linear streams of metal halide vapor. Gaps between the central and outer housings permit air to be aspired for stabilizing the flame. Additional flame stabilization may be achieved by providing a shield along the entire perimeter of the halide vapor streams to prevent the random aspiration of air into the sides of the flame.

  • Patent number: 4200445
Abstract: A method of densifying a fumed metal oxide is disclosed wherein the metal oxide is converted to a flowable sol and then dried to form a fragmented solid which is calcined. The calcined oxide may be wet milled to provide a slip for casting articles such as fused silica crucibles used in melting silicon. The method also permits the production of very refractory fused glass compositions from fumed metal oxides at temperatures substantially below those required where a melting step is employed.

  • Patent number: 4047966
Abstract: A method is disclosed wherein high purity fused silica is produced from a liquid flowable form of a silica slurry or sol and the refractoriness of the fused silica is enhanced by homogeneously doping the silica with aluminum and/or titanium oxide, preferably in conjunction with elemental silicon.
