The synthetic pozzolan is then fed to a cooler where it is maintained for a least a portion of the cooling step in a reducing atmosphere.

Dewatered feed material containing the ash material byproduct is preheated and crushed and then heated in a volatilizer to a temperature at which the metal and hydrocarbon impurities are volatilized. The ash is then separated from the volatilized materials.
