    Abstract: A method and apparatus for the sterilization of animal feed, wherein a bactericidal agent is mixed with steam for contacting and conditioning animal feed prior to a compaction process as, for instance, a pelletizing process. In one embodiment, chlorine gas is introduced in the burner of a direct fired steam generator to produce a mixture of steam, chlorine, and products of combustion which are introduced to a feed mixture in a blending unit prior to pelletizing, resulting in sterilization of the animal feed.
