  • Patent number: 9041771
Abstract: Systems, methods, and devices that control switching of a multi-mode barrier component for efficiently displaying various types of 2-D content and 3-D content are presented. A barrier control component detects an optical signal in a control region of a display screen that is providing visual content to the barrier component, and identifies the type of visual content, such as 2-D content, 3-D stereoscopic content, or 3-D autostereoscopic content, based at least in part on the optical signal. The barrier control component identifies a specified control signal based at least in part on the identified content type, and transmits the specified control signal to the barrier component via a wireline or wireless connection. The barrier component is controlled to automatically switch to a specified mode, such as 2-D mode, 3-D stereoscopic mode, or 3-D autostereoscopic mode, and employ a specified barrier pattern, in response to the received specified control signal.

  • Publication number: 20150131133
Abstract: Fast processing of information represented in digital holograms is provided to facilitate generating a phase-only hologram for displaying 3-D holographic images representative of a 3-D object scene on a display device. A holographic generator component (HGC) can receive or generate visual images, comprising depth and parallax information, of a 3-D object scene. A hologram processor component can downsample an intensity image of a visual image of the 3-D object scene using a uniform or random lattice to facilitate converting the intensity image to a sparse image. The hologram processor component can generate a complex 3-D Fresnel hologram, comprising the depth and parallax information, based on the sparse image using a fast hologram generation algorithm. The hologram processor component modify the magnitude of the pixels of the complex hologram to a defined homogeneous value to facilitate converting the complex hologram to a phase-only hologram.

  • Patent number: 8994786
Abstract: Systems, methods, and devices that generate and display a multiple view 3-D holographic image (“image”) of a 3-D real or synthetic scene are presented. A projection system captures visual information of the 3-D scene from various perspectives and generates model data to create a 3-D model of the scene. The model data is converted to holographic data, which is respectively portioned corresponding to the respective perspectives of the scene and used to generate and display respective portions of the image on respective display sections. The display sections can be separate display sections corresponding to the various perspectives, or the display sections can be on a single display that is divided into sections for the various perspectives and a 3-D adapter is employed to facilitate display of the image in the display area, wherein reflector components can be used to reflect the portions of the image to the display area.

  • Publication number: 20150077818
Abstract: Fast processing of information represented in digital holograms is provided to facilitate converting a complex Fresnel hologram into a single phase-only hologram, which can be called a bidirectional error diffusion (BERD) hologram, for displaying 3-D holographic images representative of a 3-D object scene on a display device. The BERD hologram can be capable of representing a 3-D object scene and preserving favorable visual quality on the reconstructed holographic image. A holographic generator component (HGC) can receive or generate a complex Fresnel hologram representing a 3-D object scene. The HGC can directly apply the BERD process to the complex Fresnel hologram to facilitate converting the complex Fresnel hologram into a phase-only hologram. Alternatively, the HGC can directly apply a unidirectional error diffusion process to the complex Fresnel hologram to facilitate converting the complex Fresnel hologram into a phase-only hologram.

  • Patent number: 8890931
Abstract: Systems, methods, and devices that generate and display a holographic image(s) of a 3-D real or synthetic object scene are presented. A holographic generator component (HGC) partitions a 3-D object scene into a horizontal stack of regularly spaced vertical sub-planes that are each contributed to a respective sub-line. The HGC converts the sequence of sub-lines into a collection of diffraction patterns, which are summed up and interfered with a reference beam to generate the complete hologram, which can be or can approximate a Fresnel hologram. A multi-rate filter is employed to facilitate converting sub-lines to diffraction patterns more quickly. The multi-rate filtering can be realized using convolution in the spatial domain, realized in the frequency domain using a fast Fourier transform, and/or realized in the frequency domain using a graphic processing unit.

  • Patent number: 8854424
Abstract: Systems, methods, and devices that generate and display a multiple view 3-D holographic image (“image”) of a 3-D real or synthetic scene are presented. A capture system can capture or generate as little as a single 2-D image, or a sequence of 2-D images, of a scene and can convert the 2-D visual information to facilitate generating a 3-D scene from various perspectives. Predefined distortion morphing or transition morphing is employed to generate one or more morphing images to reconstruct different perspectives of the scene without having to capture such different perspectives. A sequence of 2-D images, including the morphing images, each representing a respective view of the scene are integrated to form a 3-D integrated image, which can be displayed on a 3-D aerial projection system. The disclosed subject matter can generate and/or maintain disparity information to improve quality of the display of the 3-D integrated image.

  • Publication number: 20140210942
Abstract: Techniques for fast processing of information represented in digital holograms to facilitate generating and displaying 3-D holographic images representative of a 3-D object scene are presented. A holographic generator component (HGC) can receive or generate information representing a 3-D object scene. In real or near real time, the HGC can back-project a hologram to a virtual 2-D image known as a virtual diffraction plane (VDP); process the VDP to enhance optical properties of the VDP to facilitate enhancing or adjusting the optical properties of the 3-D holographic images when displayed by a display component; and expand the VDP to facilitate generating 3-D holographic images that can represent or recreate the 3-D object scene. The HGC can thereby process digital 3-D holograms of moderate size and display 3-D holographic images generated from the processed 3-D holograms at a desirably fast video rate.

  • Publication number: 20130113795
Abstract: From only a single two-dimensional source image (20) of a scene, multiple images (28) of the scene are generated, each image from a different viewing direction or angle. For each of the multiple images, a disparity (24) is generated corresponding to the viewing direction and combined with significant pixels (e.g., edge detected pixels) in the source image. The disparity may be filtered (26) (e.g., low-pass filtered) prior to combining with the significant pixels. The multiple images are combined (64) into an integrated image (62) for display, for example, on an autostereoscopic monitor (10). The process can be repeated for multiple related source images to create a video sequence.
