  • Patent number: 9964024
Abstract: A charge air cooler arrangement, a charge air cooler tank, and method are disclosed. The charge air cooler arrangement includes a charge air cooler having an operable thermal transfer area configured to transfer heat from inside the charge air cooler to outside of the charge air cooler. The charge air cooler arrangement may also include a valve configured to change the operable thermal transfer area from a relatively large area to a relatively small area.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 22, 2014
Date of Patent: May 8, 2018
    Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLC
Inventors: Charles A. Cockerill, Shuya Shark Yamada, Chris Paul Glugla, Phil Andrew Fabien
  • Patent number: 9080499
Abstract: Embodiments for a charge air cooler are provided. In one example, an engine method comprises increasing intake air flow velocity through a charge air cooler and coordinately adjusting a position of one or more of an intake manifold throttle and a turbocharger wastegate in response to the increased intake air flow velocity to maintain torque. In this way, intake air flow velocity may be increased while maintaining desired torque.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 20, 2012
Date of Patent: July 14, 2015
    Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLC
Inventors: Chris Paul Glugla, Charles A. Cockerill, Shuya Shark Yamada, Phil Andrew Fabien, Julia Helen Buckland
  • Patent number: 9032939
Abstract: Embodiments for a charge air cooler are provided. In one example, an engine method comprises increasing intake air flow velocity through a charge air cooler in response to an estimated condensation formation value within the charge air cooler. In this way, condensation accumulation within the charge air cooler may be prevented.
