  • Patent number: 8947204
Abstract: A system and method for identifying an object are provided. An encoded substrate includes at least one layer of material having a matrix of zones arranged on surface thereof to represent optically coded information. At least one zone of the matrix of zones is configured to absorb a predetermined first wavelength of an electromagnetic radiation. A scanner is configured to receive a reflected electromagnetic radiation associated with the matrix of zones. The optically coded information is extracted from the reflected electromagnetic radiation.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: February 3, 2015
    Assignee: The Boeing Company
Inventors: Philip Dunlap, Alan Z. Ullman
  • Patent number: 8587408
Abstract: An item identification method includes providing a layer of material having an array of zones thereon. The array of zones on the layer is interrogated with a transmitted optical light beam. Light reflected by the array of zones is received. The light is reflected in a pattern that represents a code. At least one value of the code provided by the reflected light is determined.

  • Patent number: 7920049
Abstract: A system and method for determining encoded information borne by transportation modalities. The system includes substrates carried by the modalities and an optical interrogation device capable of remotely acquiring the information and comparing it with a database of acceptable information incorporated into or proximal to the system. The encoded information is provided on the substrate in a matrix of zones exhibiting different optical properties. The matrix of zones and the associated properties constitute a code which is interrogated and read by the system.
