  • Patent number: 6418989
Abstract: A method of standing-stem log harvesting including the steps of preparing a tree for harvesting and then harvesting the same directly from the stump. A tree is prepared for harvesting by topping the tree, cutting the tree part way through the trunk near ground level with two cuts lying in generally the same plane to leave holding wood between the resulting two generally parallel cut edges, and driving support wedges or the like into both said cuts to stabilize the tree trunk. The holding wood and the wedges maintain the trunk stable and upright until it is harvested, but the holding wood is readily frangible in response to a generally horizontal pivoting force applied to the trunk near the top thereof in a direction generally perpendicular to the cut edges. For harvesting, the prepared tree is gripped near the top thereof, and a generally horizontal force is applied to the trunk at the point of gripping in a direction generally perpendicular to the cut edges, thereby breaking the holding wood.

  • Patent number: 4848703
Abstract: A method of transporting an elongated object with a grapple includes placing the object in a generally horizontal position on a surface. The grapple is opened and placed about the object. The grapple is then closed about the object with a force sufficient to hold the arms of the grapple against the object, but insufficient to squeeze the object tightly between the arms. The grapple is raised with the object, and the object is allowed to swing between the arms of the grapple to a generally vertical position. The grapple may include two arms having pivotally interconnected inner ends. The arms have outer portions at the outer ends with edges directed towards the inner ends. The grapple has a closed position wherein the edges of the outer portions are perpendicular to an axis symmetry extending between the arms of the grapple.

  • Patent number: 4152019
Abstract: A material handling system particularly suited for lifting and transporting felled timber with a helicopter. An instrument, such as a grapple, is provided for handling and holding the material. A main winch and a main cable, windable on the winch, are provided for transporting the material within the instrument while suspended from a main point. An auxiliary winch and auxiliary cable windable on the auxiliary winch are provided for suspending the instrument from an auxiliary point. The material can be handled by the instrument below the auxiliary point and then transported while suspended from the main point. When applied to a helicopter, the main point is located under the helicopter in vertical alignment with the center of gravity of the helicopter and the auxiliary point is located under the helicopter adjacent the pilot's seat.
