Patent number: 7707640Abstract: A method for copy protection includes receiving data in a recording module representing content to be recorded on a recording medium, the data including an indication that the content is to be protected from unauthorized copying. Responsive to the indication, the recording module signals a protection module to initiate a protection protocol in synchronization with the recording module. The protection module generates control information, so as to prevent the unauthorized copying of the content that is to be protected, and conveys the control information to the recording module, in accordance with the protocol. The recording module combines the control information with the data representing the content in the recording module, for recording on the recording medium.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 2005Date of Patent: April 27, 2010Assignee: Macrovision Europe LimitedInventors: Eyal Shavit, Philippe Selve, Ran Alcalay

Patent number: 7062784Abstract: A method for protecting data recorded on an original data storage medium against unauthorized copying includes receiving data encoded in accordance with an applicable recording standard, and altering a portion of the encoded data such that the altered data are identified as erroneous according to the standard. The data are recorded on the medium, together with ancillary data which are used by a processor in an intended application of the medium to operate upon the altered portion of the data such that the application runs in a manner substantially unaffected by the alteration of the data. Upon unauthorized copying of the data, however, the ancillary data are ineffective in correcting the altered portion of the encoded data, so that the alteration causes a substantially unrecoverable error in an unauthorized copy of the original medium.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 2002Date of Patent: June 13, 2006Assignee: Macrovision Europe LimitedInventors: Patrice Sinquin, Philippe Selve, Ran Alcalay

Patent number: 6988206Abstract: A method for protecting data recorded on an original storage medium against unauthorized copying. The data are encoded in accordance with Standard 908 of the International Electrotechnical Commission. A portion of the encoded data is altered to introduce an error in a sub-code Q channel of the data, such that the altered data are inconsistent with Standard 908, but do not prevent playback of the data following recording thereof. The data, including the altered data, are recorded on the original storage medium, whereby an application which plays back the recorded data runs in a manner substantially unaffected by the alteration of the data, but a substantially unrecoverable error occurs in unauthorized copying of the original storage medium.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 2000Date of Patent: January 17, 2006Assignee: Macrovision Europe LimitedInventors: Ran Alcalay, Philippe Selve, Patrice Sinquin

Publication number: 20050281165Abstract: According to one standard, a multiple session audio disc has only two sessions, namely an audio session including successive audio tracks, and a following data session including just one data track. It has been determined that where copying of such a disc is to be undertaken using several common Microsoft Windows operating systems, the disc can be copy protected by breaching the rules of this standard. Specifically, if a two session audio disc is provided which has two tracks in the second data session, the Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems will fail to reconcile the data on the disc. As the operating systems are prevented from copying the audio information on the disc the use of the non-standard format acts to copy protect the optical disc.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 24, 2005Publication date: December 22, 2005Inventors: Philippe Selve, Victor Kovner

Publication number: 20050099921Abstract: A copy protected optical disc has a first audio session and a second data session. The second data session has the conventional structure of a Lead-In, a program area, and a Lead-Out, and the information in the Lead-In area of the second session is altered to provide copy protection for the audio content on the disc. For example, the TOC of the second session has had the content at frames N+12, N+13 and N+14 indicated as an audio track by the setting of CONTROL to 0. This is equivalent to providing a pointer which is said to address an audio track but which points to an area of the program area at which there is no audio track. When reading data from an optical disc a user will use an application player to access the optical disc by an appropriate driver. Where the information on the disc is interpreted by a CD file system program CDFS.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 5, 2004Publication date: May 12, 2005Applicant: MACROVISION CORPORATIONInventors: Philippe Selve, Victor Kovner

Publication number: 20050078822Abstract: An application, media drive, and media are configured so as to cooperate with one another to provide secure access and copying of protected content on the media. The application cooperates with the media drive to identify the media as a cooperating component, and in the process, also identifies the media drive as a cooperating component. The media includes information facilitating such identifying activity, such as a fingerprint indicating the copy protection method used to protect the content. Also included on the media is a guard module that authenticates the application as a cooperating component, establishes secure channels respectively with the application and the media drive for communicating secret information, installs licenses included on the media, and only allows access to the protected content if the media is an original copy. The application then manages usage and/or copying of the protected content according to the installed licenses.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 9, 2004Publication date: April 14, 2005Inventors: Eyal Shavit, Philippe Selve, Ori Dvir

Publication number: 20020162058Abstract: A method for protecting data recorded on an original data storage medium against unauthorized copying includes receiving data encoded in accordance with an applicable recording standard, and altering a portion of the encoded data such that the altered data are identified as erroneous according to the standard. The data are recorded on the medium, together with ancillary data which are used by a processor in an intended application of the medium to operate upon the altered portion of the data such that the application runs in a manner substantially unaffected by the alteration of the data. Upon unauthorized copying of the data, however, the ancillary data are ineffective in correcting the altered portion of the encoded data, so that the alteration causes a substantially unrecoverable error in an unauthorized copy of the original medium.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 21, 2002Publication date: October 31, 2002Applicant: MIDBAR TECH (1998) LTD.Inventors: Patrice Sinquin, Philippe Selve, Ran Alcalay

Patent number: 6256738Abstract: In a manufacturing process of a continuous linear velocity (CLV) storage medium, a method for rendering a file stored on the CLV storage medium immunized against an unauthorized duplication. The CLV includes a plurality of consecutive blocks, each including a data section and control section. The control section includes an error correction and an error detection code. The blocks are configured in a given format. The method includes the steps of: (a) modifying a portion of the data section in a block so as to constitute modified data section. The modified data constitutes reconfigured format which violates the given format. The method further includes the step of modifying the control section that is associated with the modified data section, such that the error correction and error detection codes match the modified data section.Type: GrantFiled: October 20, 1998Date of Patent: July 3, 2001Assignee: Midbar Tech (1998) Ltd.Inventors: Patrice Sinquin, Philippe Selve, Ran Alcalay
