  • Patent number: 7950745
Abstract: An improved bit assembly for road milling, mining, and trenching equipment includes a streamlined tip assembly that is a combination of conical and cylindrical in shape and devoid of protrusions or annular indentations that might impede the flow of removed material over and around the bit assembly or provide space for removed material to become clogged or imbedded on the tip assembly. The generally cylindrical hollow shank that mounts the bit holder to the bit block includes at least one axially aligned slot along its side wall that allows the side wall to bend supply radial force to maintain the bit holder in the bit block.

  • Patent number: 7850250
Abstract: A rotatable tool has a tool body that is generally symmetrical about a longitudinal axis, an enlarged cutting head, and a rearwardly extending shank. The shank joins the enlarged cutting head at an annular flange having an annular inner portion contiguous with the forward end of the shank and an annular outer portion contiguous with the outer circumference of the enlarged cutting head. The annular flange is not planar. Instead, the annular inner portion of the flange is positioned axially forward of the annular outer portion.

  • Publication number: 20100253130
Abstract: A quick change type bit holder for use in a bit assembly for road milling, road planing, trenching and mining equipment wherein a bit shank extends completely through an axially oriented bit holder bore includes a slotted shank having an outwardly tapered bit holder bore wherein insertion of the bit shank in a bit block acts to slightly collapse the shank which collapses the tapered bore to a generally cylindrical configuration that preferably snugly retains the bit shank rotatably therein.

  • Patent number: 7780242
Abstract: A compressible sleeve for fitting around the shank of a rotatable tool has a cut out portion at the forward end thereof. The sleeve is compressed to a diameter less than the inner diameter of the bore of a tool holder by an annular wear ring having an inwardly directed projection that retains the cylindrical sleeve to a diameter that is less than the diameter of the bore of the tool holder. When the shank of the tool is driven into the bore of the tool holder, the wear ring is forced forwardly along the sleeve until the projection falls in the cut out portion of the sleeve allowing the sleeve to expand to the diameter of the bore of the tool holder and locking the wear ring from rotating with the tool.

  • Patent number: 7770287
Abstract: An assembly machine for assembling a rotatable tool has a frame with a base. A retainer on the base holds a blank tool body with the cylindrical shank thereof extending upwardly. A motor assembly at the upper end of the frame moves a cylindrical assembly member axially downwardly and a tubular lower end of the assembly member forces as annular wear ring around a compressible sleeve on the shank of the tool.

  • Patent number: 7600544
Abstract: The cylindrical shank of a rotatable tool is retained in the cylindrical bore of a tool holder by a retainer that engages an annular groove on a portion of the shank of the tool that extends outward of the rear surface of the tool holder. The tool has an axial bore in the distal end of the shank. The retainer has a pair of spaced ridges that engage the annular groove on the shank and a panel that extends across the distal end of the shank. The retainer is held in place by a pin extending through the panel and into the bore in the distal end of the shank.

  • Patent number: 7229136
Abstract: A compressible sleeve for fitting around the shank of a rotatable tool has a cut out portion at the forward end thereof. The sleeve is compressed to a diameter less than the inner diameter of the bore of a tool holder by an annular wear ring having a generally cylindrical central opening with a diameter larger than the diameter of the bore of the tool holder, but having an inwardly directed projection that retains the cylindrical sleeve in a diameter that is less than the diameter of the bore of the tool holder. When the shank of the tool is subsequently driven into the bore of the tool holder, the wear ring is forced forwardly along the sleeve until the projection of the wear ring falls between the cut out portions of the sleeve thereby allowing the sleeve to expand to the diameter of the bore of the tool holder. The outer walls of the cut out portion of the sleeve engage the ends of the inwardly directed projection of the wear ring thereby preventing the wear ring from rotating with the tool.

  • Patent number: 7195321
Abstract: A tool has a tapered forward cutting end behind which is a cylindrical shank. A rearwardly facing annular flange separates the forward cutting end from the shank. The shank is received in a tool holder having a planar forward surface, and fitted around the shank of the tool and resting on the forward surface of the tool holder is an annular wear ring. The wear ring has a small outer diameter portion that is less than the outer diameter of the radial flange and less than the diameter of the forward end of the tool holder, thereby allowing a gap between those parts to receive an extraction tool. The wear ring also has a large outer diameter portion at least equal to the diameter of the forward surface of the tool holder.

  • Patent number: 7150505
Abstract: A rotatable tool has a cylindrical shank and a compressible sleeve fitted thereon to retain the shank in the bore of a tool holder. A wear ring is positioned behind the forward cutting end of the tool and against the forward surface of the tool holder. The compressible sleeve is locked to the wear ring to prevent rotation of the wear ring with the tool. Also, the outer diameter of the wear ring is greater than the width of the forward surface of the tool holder forming an overhang, and a second tool can then be used to engage the overhang to remove the tool from the tool holder.
