  • Patent number: 7757956
Abstract: Modular, portable data collection terminals are disclosed for use in mixed wireless and hard-wired RF communication networks, wherein various radio transmitter modules and associated antennas may be selectively added to a base terminal unit to solve networking problems associated with specific types of business environments. Modularity exists in both the hardware (splitting data collection and processing control circuitry from radio transceiver control circuitry) and software (splitting transceiver specific, lower level communication protocol from generic, higher level communication protocol). The control circuitry, including associated microprocessors devices, interact to selectively activate communication circuits to perform necessary communication or data processing functions and enter and remain in a power-saving dormant state during other times. To support such dormant or “sleeping” states, a series of communication protocols provide for channel access to the communication network.

  • Publication number: 20100167782
Abstract: A mobile customer service station operating within a wireless multi-hop communication network includes a console on a wheeled chassis. The console carries and houses a number of components which are used in merchandising operations to conclude customer purchase transactions. The items supported externally on the console are a printer for printing purchase receipts, customer credit charge agreements and records of transactions, and a magnetic card reader for reading information from a magnetic stripe of a customer's credit card. In one embodiment, the operation of the printer, credit card reader and the cash drawer is controlled by a multi-function control unit located within an enclosure of the console. The control unit is electrically powered by a self-contained power source which is preferably a deep cycle rechargeable battery. The console also houses a transceiver unit which under the control of the control unit is capable of interactive communication with a premises network.

  • Publication number: 20090175318
Abstract: Portable measuring devices which communicate by low power transceivers through a communication controller with a printer device collect weight and size data on articles to be shipped. The collected weight and size data are combined with origin and destination data, and labels are printed bearing pertinent shipping and routing information in machine readable format. The labels are attached to the articles to be shipped and accompany the articles to their respective destinations. At transfer points the labels are read by scanner devices which also communicate by low power transceiver links with the communication controller. The wireless linking of the scanner devices promotes human safety by the absence of cords which could cause entanglement of an operator in mechanized conveying equipment. The communication controllers at each stage of the shipping process have the capability of transferring received and updated status information on the shipped articles to a central data station.

  • Publication number: 20080286386
Abstract: The present disclosure provides methods of diagnosing cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer by detecting Na+, K+-ATPase expression. For example, it is demonstrated herein that expression of the Na+, K+-ATPase ?1-subunit increases in cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer, relative to normal cervical tissue. Also provided are methods of treating cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer by decreasing the biological activity of the Na+, K+-ATPase. For example, therapeutically effective amounts of one or more Na+, K+-ATPase inhibitors can be applied to the cervix to treat cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer.

  • Publication number: 20080224439
Abstract: An application for a device for human conveyance includes a front wheel and a rear wheel. The rear wheel interfaced to a sprocket through a ratchet drive system which allows forward rotation of the rear wheel in response to forward rotation of the sprocket and allows free backward rotation of the sprocket. A frame interfaces the front wheel to the rear wheel keeping the front wheel at a constant distance from the rear wheel. The front and rear wheels are rotatably interfaced to the frame. A front end of an arc-shaped spring is affixed to the frame in proximity to the front wheel and a rear end of the arc-shaped spring has a sprocket gear interfaced to the sprocket whereas depression of the arc-shaped spring pushes the rear-end of the arc-shaped spring in a rearward direction with respect to the rear wheel and the sprocket gear turns the sprocket in a forward rotational direction.

  • Publication number: 20080045777
Abstract: An electromagnetic drive for use in a ventricular assist device. The electromagnetic drive provides adjustment to the device pressure according to the current through an electromagnet. The device includes a pair of U-shaped cores, each having a center section and two legs; one or more coils, each wound around a selected U-shaped core that, when electrically energized, generate a magnetic flux and define one or more pairs of magnetic poles each having a polar axis; and an armature between the U-shaped cores having two non-magnetic ends and a permanent magnet therebetween for generating a magnet force on the armature resulting from the attraction of the magnet to the U-shaped cores when the coils are not electrically energized. The drive geometry reduces lateral instability and device size and increases magnetic efficiency and linearity. Preferably, a coil is wound around each center section. Alternatively, the coils are wound around the legs.

  • Publication number: 20070212932
Abstract: A busway fitting wherein the switch and/or fuse are disposed in a horizontal orientation. As the switch assembly and/or fuse are disposed in a horizontal orientation, the buses coupled to the switch assembly and/or fuse also extend horizontally. As such, the buses coupled to the switch assembly and/or fuse occupy a reduced amount of space. In this configuration, the transition buses may extend in a generally horizontal direction and such, the size of the busway fitting may be reduced.

  • Publication number: 20060287568
Abstract: A ventricular assist device (VAD) for assisting either or both heart ventricles. The VAD pumps blood between an inlet and an outlet. The VAD includes a bearingless electromagnetic drive unit comprising an armature disposed between two cores, a compressible sac, valves, and a frame. The armature moves toward the sac in an eject stroke for expelling blood therefrom to the outlet. An energy storage element is preferably included and adapted to store and release energy from the drive unit. The armature is decoupled from the compressible chamber after completion of the eject stroke such that the armature retracts. Following retraction, the sac is passively filled with blood from the inlet and the energy stored in the storage element during retraction is delivered during the eject stroke. The device preferably has two cores with coils wound around each core's center section or legs. Alternatively, one of the cores is coil-less.
