  • Patent number: 6794579
Abstract: A high temperature superconducting cable includes a tubular support and a plurality of superconducting tapes. The superconducting tapes include a superconducting material enclosed in a metal covering, spirally wound onto the tubular support to form at least an electroinsulated, thermally-insulated, and refrigerated superconducting layer. The superconducting tapes also include at least a metal strip coupled to the metal covering. A process for manufacturing high temperature superconducting cables is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6512311
Abstract: A superconducting cable (1) for high power with at least one phase comprises a superconducting core (2) wherein a plurality of elements (3) are housed, which are structurally independent and magnetically uncoupled, each of which includes—for each phase—a couple of phase and neutral coaxial conductors, each formed by at least a layer of superconducting material, electrically insulated from one another by interposition of a dielectric material (8). Thanks to the distribution of the superconducting material into several coaxial conductive elements (3), the cable (1) allows to transmit high current amounts in conditions of superconductivity, while using a high-temperature superconducting material sensitive to the magnetic field.

  • Patent number: 6255595
Abstract: A superconducting cable for high power with at least one phase includes a superconducting core wherein a plurality of elements are housed, which are structurally independent and magnetically uncoupled, each of which includes—for each phase—a couple of phase and neutral coaxial conductors, each formed by at least a layer of superconducting material, electrically insulated from one another by interposition of a dielectric material. As a result of the distribution of the superconducting material into several coaxial conductive elements, the cable allows to transmit high current amounts in conditions of superconductivity, while using a high-temperature superconducting material sensitive to the magnetic field. The conductive elements are connected at the ends to yield a mean exploitation efficiency of 100%.

  • Patent number: 6049036
Abstract: A terminal for connecting a superconducting multiphase cable, a superconducting three-phase cable for example, to a room temperature electrical equipment is described. The terminal includes a casing with cooling fluid, inside which the three cable superconductors are each connected with a resistive conductor the end of which is connected to the room temperature equipment phases at the outside of the casing. The terminal includes superconducting connectors between the three neutral superconductors and a single resistive conductor the end of which is externally associated with the room temperature equipment. The neutral superconducting connectors and the junction area of the connector of the single conductor are disposed inside the cold area of the casing.

  • Patent number: 4417093
Abstract: A direct current, electric, submarine cable which may be used in long lengths and at great depths and which has improved voltage breakdown characteristics with respect to voids which form in the insulation. The cable has a conductor surrounded by an inner semi-conductive screen which is surrounded by cellulose paper tape insulation which is surrounded by an outer semi-conductive screen which is surrounded by a metal sheath. The paper tape is impregnated with a compound comprising a viscous hydrocarbon oil containing a substance having polar groups, the amount of the substance being sufficient to make the volume resistivity of the compound 100 times lower than the volume resistivity of the tape with the compound therein.

  • Patent number: 4327245
Abstract: A direct current cable, sealing end installation, the cable having a bared conductor end, a first semi-conductive screen around the conductor, a layer of insulating material around the screen, a second semi-conductive screen around the insulating layer and a conductive sheath around the second screen. The sheath the second screen and the insulating layer are stripped back to expose a portion of the second screen, a portion of the first screen and an intermediate length of the insulating layer. A hollow, cylindrical container with an inner diameter larger than the diameter of the cable extends lengthwise of the cable and from adjacent the bared conductor end to adjacent the sheath; and the container end adjacent the sheath has a liquid-tight connection to the sheath. The container is filled with liquid having a resistivity in the range from 10.sup.8 to 10.sup.6 ohm-meter to below the bared conductor end.
