  • Patent number: 7720682
Abstract: From a text entry tool, a digital data processing device receives inherently ambiguous user input. Independent of any other user input, the device interprets the received user input against a vocabulary to yield candidates such as words (of which the user input forms the entire word or part such as a root, stem, syllable, affix), or phrases having the user input as one word. The device displays the candidates and applies speech recognition to spoken user input. If the recognized speech comprises one of the candidates, that candidate is selected. If the recognized speech forms an extension of a candidate, the extended candidate is selected. If the recognized speech comprises other input, various other actions are taken.

  • Publication number: 20100122164
Abstract: The invention concerns user entry of information into a system with an input device. A scheme is provided in which an entire word that a user wants to enter is predicted after the user enters a specific symbol, such as a space character. If the user presses an ambiguous key thereafter, rather than accept the prediction, the selection list is reordered. For example, a user enters the phrase “Lets run to school. Better yet, lets drive to “.””” After the user presses the space, after first entering the second occurrence of the word “to,” the system predicts that the user is going to enter the word “school” based on the context in which the user has entered that word in the past. Should the user enter an ambiguous key after the space, then a word list which contains the word “school” is reordered and other options are made available to the user.

  • Patent number: 7636083
Abstract: A method and apparatus for facilitating text input for network applications, such as, for example, wireless applications, are described. Multiple input signals are received from a user, each input signal corresponding to a key within a user input interface and further representing Latin, e.g. English, language phonetic equivalents of at least one language character including a language character intended by the user to form a word construct in a language. Each input signal is further used to generate at least one proposed language character. At least one proposed word construct is further formed in the language using the at least one proposed language character. Finally, the at least one proposed word construct is displayed for the user on a display screen.

  • Publication number: 20090284471
Abstract: There is disclosed an enhanced text entry system which uses word-level analysis to correct inaccuracies automatically in user keystroke entries on reduced-size or virtual keyboards. A method and system are defined which determine one or more alternate textual interpretations of each sequence of inputs detected within a designated auto-correcting region. The actual interaction locations for the keystrokes may occur outside the boundaries of the specific keyboard key regions associated with the actual characters of the word interpretations proposed or offered for selection, where the distance from each interaction location to each corresponding intended character may in general increase with the expected frequency of the intended word in the language or in a particular context. Likewise, in a virtual keyboard system, the keys actuated may differ from the keys actually associated with the letters of the word interpretations.

  • Patent number: 7587378
Abstract: A computing apparatus includes a display to present human-readable information and a user input facility. A rule data store contains a statement of rules governing prescribed aspects of presenting data upon the display. These aspects include those aspects subject to variation by language whenever the following changes: type of data, and/or nature of user-operation being performed involving the data. A rules engine is configured to implement the rules. One or more common programs are configured to recognize conditions for applying the rules, and in response, to invoke the rules engine.

  • Publication number: 20080244446
Abstract: A system and method for entering icons and other pieces of media through an ambiguous text entry interface. The system receives text entry from users, disambiguates the text entry, and presents the user with a pick list of icons, emoticons, graphics, images, sounds, videos or other non-textual media that are associated with the text entry. The user may select one of the displayed pieces of media, and the text entry may be replaced or supplemented with the piece of media selected by the user. In some cases, the system presents the pick list of media to the user in an order that is related to the probability that the user will select the displayed media.

  • Patent number: 7395203
Abstract: A system and method for inputting Chinese characters using Pinyin without requiring the entry of a delimiter key between Pinyin entries in a reduced keyboard is disclosed. The system searches for all possible single or multiple Pinyin spellings based on the entered Latin alphabets. Once the user has completed the inputting of the Pinyin spellings for desired Chinese phrase or characters, all possible matching phrases or characters are displayed on screen and off-screen due to screen size. The user then scrolls through a list of matching phrases or characters and selects the desired one by clicking.

  • Patent number: 7319957
Abstract: A hybrid approach to improve handwriting recognition and voice recognition in data process systems is disclosed. In one embodiment, a front end is used to recognize strokes, characters and/or phonemes. The front end returns candidates with relative or absolute probabilities of matching to the input. Based on linguistic characteristics of the language, e.g. alphabetical or ideographic language for the words being entered, e.g. frequency of words and phrases being used, likely part of speech of the word entered, the morphology of the language, or the context in which the word is entered), a back end combines the candidates determined by the front end from inputs for words to match with known words and the probabilities of the use of such words in the current context.

  • Publication number: 20070156747
Abstract: In one general aspect, information is presented to a user by receiving a first input from a user and structuring the first input as a first stem. A separator is received designating subsequently-received input as a second input. The second input is received and the second input is structured as a second stem. The first stem and the second stem are related to a library of candidates. One or more results are rendered in response to relating the first stem and the second stem to the library of candidates and the user is enabled to select from among the one or more results.

  • Patent number: 7218781
Abstract: A Chinese text entry system and method is provided to allow users to enter a character to a device such as a cellular phone or a PDA by adding a first few strokes required for the character using a joystick or its equivalent. By simply moving the joystick to add one or more strokes which are used to start writing a character, or in some case even before any stroke is added, a user can find a desired character from a displayed selection list. The selection list is context sensitive, varying depending on the last character entered, so that the user can be provided with the most possible candidates of the desired character.

  • Patent number: 7164367
Abstract: An efficient and simple approach to encoding ideographic characters as sequences of input strokes or stroke categories is disclosed, wherein: each character is represented by one or more sequences of one or more components; each component corresponds to a plurality of alternative stroke sequences, each of which is associated with a probability that it will be the sequence which the user enters to specify the given component or character; and the probability associated with the user's preferred stroke sequence is automatically increased by the system when the character is selected, thus automatically adapting to a user's preferences.

  • Publication number: 20060247915
Abstract: An operating sequence for a handheld computing device manages the device to automatically detect cues describing the device's environmental and user actions performed with the device, learn which cues and cue combinations are relevant to predict user actions, and then in response to occurrence of the relevant cues, predictively implementing the appropriate user action or configuring the device in anticipation of user action.

  • Publication number: 20050027534
Abstract: A system and method for inputting Chinese characters using phonetic-based or stroke-based input method in a reduced keyboard is disclosed. By introducing common indices to ideographic characters, the system allows the ideographic characters to be shared among different type of input methods such as phonetic-based input method and stroke-based input method. The system matches input sequences to input method specific indices such as phonetic or stroke indices. These input method specific indices are then converted into indices to ideographic characters, which is then used to retrieve ideographic characters.
