  • Patent number: 8384311
Abstract: The present invention relates to a Light Emitting Diode (LED) selection circuit for an LED driver that drives multiple unequal lengths of LED strings, which selectively turns the LED strings ON and OFF corresponding to an input alternating current (AC) line voltage. The LED driver provides optimal efficiency as input AC line voltage varies from low to high voltages (i.e. 90V to 150V for nominal 120 VAC operation and 190V to 250V for nominal 220 VAC operation). Thus The LED driver can be used internationally since it accepts voltages from virtually every industrialized country in the world. The LED selection circuit in accordance with the present invention comprises a rectifier, multiple LED strings, multiple current sources and a controller. The controller generates multiple signals to the corresponding current source and turns ON and OFF the LED strings.

  • Patent number: 8198876
Abstract: An approach is provided for a power factor compensating method to compensate other electronic devices that use a common power source in order to improve power factor from the perspective of a power company. The other electronic device is a type of a non-linear load, and the method enables a compensator to receive a supply voltage from the power source commonly connected to the traditional electronic devices and disables a load of the compensator for a period. The period corresponds to a range that makes an overall supply current more proportional to the supply voltage.

  • Publication number: 20120086393
Abstract: An approach is provided for minimizing capacitance requirements of a filter capacitor of a charging device for an intermittent load. A method for charging an intermittent load that is able to pulse on and off periodically without compromising the utility of the load. The method comprises setting timestamps relating to a waveform of an input Alternating Current (AC) voltage. The timestamps are synchronized to the AC voltage and comprise on times and off times that turn the intermittent load off and on. The method further comprises charging the intermittent load during the on times. Therefore, the capacitance of the filter capacitor used for the intermittent load can be significantly reduced since there will be no voltage drop when the intermittent load has been turned off.
