  • Publication number: 20060072520
Abstract: Improved throughput is provided in a spacecraft TDMA cellular communications system by introducing a standby state, in addition to the idle and transfer states, of the medium access control (MAC) protocol, which controls the transfer of data over the radio interface between the network and the user terminals. The terrestrial locations include mobile user terminals and gateways which provide connections to the land line telephone system and/or the land packet data network i.e. Internet service provider. Each of the terrestrial terminals and gateways include a MAC to control the transmitting and receiving of data between the gateway and user terminals. Since packet data is bursty, multiple transitions occur between the idle and transfer states during data transfers. The new standby state maintains synchronization, reducing the transition time to the data transfer state by comparison with the transition time from an idle state where the network does not maintain user synchronization.

  • Publication number: 20060025118
Abstract: A method for controlling the communications of a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) in a wireless network using presence and situation information begins by generating presence and situation information pertaining to the WTRU. The presence and situation data is stored and, subsequently, retrieved upon receipt of a communication at the WTRU. The communication settings of the WTRU are adjusted by using the presence and situation information.

  • Publication number: 20050286487
Abstract: A data flow is divided into multiple sub-flows. At least two of the sub-flows are routed through separate paths through one or multiple networks, and the sub-flows are received and combined to reconstruct an estimate of the original data flow. The separate paths may be result by placing different routing information in the headers of the packets of different sub-flows, by routing by a router the packets of each sub-flow differently, using different channels for the sub-flows or using different within channel paths, such as multipaths.

  • Publication number: 20050261028
Abstract: A smart antenna is disclosed for generating nested beams. The antenna is configured to generate a cover beam and a center beam. The cover beam has a wide coverage area and the center beam, which is nested within the cover beam, has a narrow coverage area. Both the cover beam and the center beam may be independently steerable or steered jointly as if coupled together. The cover beam is preferably used for system-wide purposes, such as multicasting, broadcasting, paging, tracking, and physical measurements. The center beam is preferably used for exchanging data between a transmitter and receiver. However, the cover beam and the center beam may also be used for transmission of data and signaling traffic respectively.

  • Publication number: 20050226461
Abstract: Signals encoded with watermark information are generated and broadcast into a protected area for capture by illicit recording devices along with their intended targets. An illicit recording in which at least a portion of the broadcast watermark signals are recorded is obtained and correlated with a known position of the broadcast watermark signals to yield the location of illicit recording devices. In an alternate embodiment, a surveillance device, being image and time synchronized with a signal broadcasting device, monitors and records the protected area. Illicit recordings containing the broadcast watermark are obtained and correlated with corresponding recordings taken by the surveillance device to identify the location of illicit recording devices. In an alternate embodiment, the surveillance device further monitors the quality of the broadcast watermark signals and adjusts them accordingly to achieve a desired quality level.

  • Publication number: 20050221848
Abstract: The system and method of the present invention establishes a communication link between a user equipment (UE) and a base station in a communication system having a plurality of base stations which each transmit a common primary synchronization code (PSC) in a primary synchronization channel in conjunction with a base station specific secondary synchronization code (SSC) within a system frame, which receives with the UE an input signal including the PSC and SSC from at least one of the base stations. The UE analyzes the input signal to detect any received PSCs within a selected time period which has duration corresponding to the length of a system frame and determining a relative location of a strongest PSC within the selected time period. The input signal is then processed to remove the PSC from at least the determined PSC location. A secondary synchronization code (SSC) is then detected for the determined location from the processed signal. The communication link is then established using the detected SSCs.

  • Publication number: 20050002407
Abstract: Method and apparatus delivering voice/data services within a piconet operating over a limited range or over a WLAN communicating with 3GPP devices by reformatting data into IP format before delivering to the WLAN. The service is short message service (SMS). Upon receipt of an SMS message, relevant routing information is retrieved. A PDGW address for the SMS message is identified and is sent to the PDGW address which identifies the WLAN user equipment (UE) for receiving the SMS and reformats the SMS message into IP format (text or encapsulation) for delivery to the UE. A protocol architecture is provided for SMS delivery over WLANs, in particular, for UMTS/CDMA based SMS over WLAN through two alternative mechanisms, i.e., SMS tunneling and SMS proxy, for protocols for the delivery of SMS across the WLAN. The invention enhances standard 802.11 in the context of UMTS and CDMA 2000; as well as other scenarios.
