  • Patent number: 6360094
Abstract: Method and apparatus for creating and using a database containing automated measurements to pin point cell sites and sectors with antenna-related problems are disclosed. Each base station in a wireless communications network is equipped with a site test mobile (“STM”) connected to the antenna(s) for the cell site. A database contains information regarding the location (latitude and longitude) of every cell site, or base station, and the design type, orientation, patterns (vertical and horizontal), and gain for every antenna in the network by sector. Automated measurements of various transmission parameters are periodically taken using the respective STMs and compared with calibration data stored in the database to determine the location and type of antenna problems that exist in the network.

  • Patent number: 6192246
Abstract: Provided is a system and method for optimizing the performance of the cellular network by maintaining status values concerning the cell and adjusting the conditions for handoff in response to the status values. The status values may include a pilot signal strength measurement for the second cell, a round trip delay measurement from the second cell to the mobile unit, an a designation of whether the second cell is current, removed, or most recently removed. With the status values, a determination can be made to remove the second cell from the mobile unit's Active Set if either the pilot signal strength for the second cell falls below a predetermined threshold or the round trip delay value exceeds a predetermined maximum.

  • Patent number: 6112089
Abstract: A method and system for increasing capacity and improving performance of a cellular network. The method includes maintaining and analyzing matrices of a cell in the network. Once matrix stores performance values and statistics concerning the cell and optimizing conditions for handoff from the cell in response to the performance values. Another matrix stores status values and statistics concerning the cell and optimizing conditions for handoff in response to the status values. A third matrix stores information about cells that should be considered as potential handoff cells.

  • Patent number: 6026301
Abstract: A method for performing a hard handoff of a call from a first cell site of a CDMA cellular network to a target cell site of a second cellular network, such as an AMPS network or a second CDMA network. As a mobile unit operating in the first CDMA network moves toward the second cellular network, the first cell site uses two separate RTD thresholds for comparison with a measured RTD distance between the mobile unit and the first cell site. Handoff is initiated when the RTD distance exceeds the first RTD threshold and is completed when the RTD distance exceeds the second RTD threshold. If the first cell site is not co-located with a cell site of the second network, the first cell site utilizes receivers placed in the target cell site for handoff. If the first cell site is co-located with a second cell site of the second network, the second cell site of the second network is always the target cell site.
