Backup of the application data includes retrieving a Logical Unit Number (LUN) identification (ID) used by the application to store the application data in a storage volume. Backup of the application data also includes performing a virtual storage resolution for the LUN ID to determine whether the application data is stored in the storage volume identified by the LUN ID based on a first virtual mapping or a physical mapping. Backup also includes storing in metadata for the backup the LUN ID and whether the LUN ID is based on the first virtual mapping or the physical mapping. Backup includes creating a backup of the application data stored in the storage volume. Application data can subsequently be restored based on the application data that is backed up.

Abstract: Examples are disclosed for a data protection service available to a tenant having access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources that may be included in a cloud computing network. In some examples, the tenant may be able to view backups and/or recover backed up data based on the one or more policies for the data protection service. The one or more policies may be generic to an application, a system or a configuration for the tenant to access and/or utilize the shared pool of configurable computing resources. Abstract: One or more techniques and/or systems are provided for restoring an original virtual machine from a snapshot according to a current virtual machine layout different than an original virtual machine layout, where the original virtual machine layout is specified within the snapshot. That is, a snapshot of an original virtual machine stored within one or more original datastores according to an original virtual machine layout may be created. Over time, as changes occur to the virtual machine, the original virtual machine may be stored as a current virtual machine according to a current virtual machine layout. To effect the restoration, a cloned datastore comprising replicas of the original datastores may be created from the snapshot, and a cloned virtual machine and one or more cloned virtual machine disks (from the cloned datastore) may be migrated to one or more current datastores according to the current virtual machine layout.
