The access point is coupled to the second station by a wireless link. The first and second stations are coupled by a direct wireless link, and also at least two indirect links passing through the access point. A link selection component on the first station is operative to estimate the capacities of the various links, and to select one of the links for transmitting a bitstream. The link selection component can also dynamically re-select a link for continuing an on-going transmission of a given bitstream.

    Abstract: A number of probe messages are formed in a first node of a network, to be sent to a second node of the network. Reply messages received from the second node are monitored in the first node, to detect a loss. The loss is a failure to receive a predetermined number of one or more reply messages that correspond to the probe messages. Available bandwidth is then determined, for communicating in the network with the second node, based on the detected loss. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.

    Abstract: A method and system for pre-fetching network data using a pre-fetching control protocol is described. The method includes dividing a data transmission into a plurality of packets at a source, transmitting a number of the packets of the data transmission from the source to a destination while transmitting the remaining packets of the data transmission from the source to an alternate node, and transmitting to the destination the packets received at the alternate node from the source. The packets of the data transmission received from the source and the alternate node may then be assembled and reordered at the destination.
