In various embodiments, the antenna parameter measurements may be based on data from sensors that are operable to detect operational characteristics of the plurality of antennas based on the proximity of a portion of a user's body to the sensors. The antenna parameter measurements are then used to select one of the antennas within the plurality of antennas for transmitting and receiving data signals by a wireless communication device.

    Abstract: A multiple input-multiple output antenna assembly with high isolation between the antennas is disclosed. The antenna assembly includes a substrate with a ground layer at its surface. Two antennas are disposed opposing each other on the substrate. A meandering slot is interposed between the first and second antennas on the ground plane. A first signal port is provided for applying a first signal to excite the first antenna and a second signal port is provided for applying a second signal to excite the second antenna. The meandering slot provides isolation that inhibits electromagnetic propagation between the first and second antennas. A third signal port is provided for applying a third signal to excite the meandering slot to act as another antenna for multiple input, multiple output operation.

The antenna assembly has a six-sided support frame non-electrically conductive material which provides external surfaces on which specific conductive patterns are formed with the patterns on different surface being selectively connected together. The support frame is mounted on one major surface of a dielectric substrate that has an opposite major surface with a conductive layer that serves as ground plane. A portion of the opposite major surface, on which the conductive layer is not applied, forms one surface of the support frame.
