  • Patent number: 6177800
Abstract: A windowed shutter on a micro-electro-mechanical system improves output current of a non-contacting electrostatic voltmeter. The output current is increased by increasing the area modulated by the micro-electro-mechanical shutter system and by increasing the speed of that modulation. The increase in the area modulated by the windowed shutter is in direct proportion to the number of windows used. Moreover, the speed of the modulation is increased by increasing the resonant frequency of the system. Less shutter mass increases the frequency thus increasing shutter movement over time.

  • Patent number: 5899605
Abstract: A system for determining, in real time, the precise color measurements of a colorant being applied in a printing apparatus, the colorant being a combination of two or more primary colorants. Light from a light source is transmitted through or reflected from the colorant mixture, and received by a sensor having a relatively small number of photodetectors, each photodetector having a different translucent primary-color filter thereon. Various special algorithms can be used to approach the accuracy of a spectrophotometer using a relatively simple light sensor.

  • Patent number: 5835975
Abstract: A sensor system for measuring physical properties of paper. The paper property sensor system includes a surface and a diaphragm opposed to each other. The small diaphragm includes a first pair and a second pair p-type piezoresistors. Each piezoresistor of the first pair has a longitudinal axis and is located perpendicular to and very close to one of the long edges of the diaphragm. Each piezoresistor of the second pair has a longitudinal axis and is located between and parallel to first pair of piezoresistors, and away from the short edges of the diaphragm. Coupling the first pair of piezoresistors with the second pair via a Wheatstone bridge produces a voltage representative of the shear force exerted by a sheet.

  • Patent number: 5781828
Abstract: A system and method for color mixing management in an electrostatographic printing system, wherein a developing material reservoir containing an operative solution of colored developing material including a mixture of selected color components is continuously replenished with selected differently colored developing material concentrates in a predetermined ratio so as to be capable of producing a customer selectable color image area on an output substrate. The present invention may also be utilized to mix a customer selectable color in situ, either from stored proportions known to compensate for developability differences or from approximate amounts of primary color components initially deposited and mixed in the developing material reservoir with the resultant operative developing material mixture continually developed and replenished with a predetermined ratio of color components until the developing material mixture reaches a steady state color.

  • Patent number: 5751317
Abstract: A thermal ink-jet ejector having a fluid flow channel extending between an ink inlet and a nozzle for the ejection of liquid ink therefrom, includes a rear channel diffuser disposed between the heating element and the inlet, and/or a front channel diffuser disposed between the heating element and the nozzle. Each diffuser includes an arrangement of tapers which decrease the flow impedance of liquid ink flowing toward the nozzle, and increase the flow impedance of liquid ink flowing toward the inlet. The arrangement increases the kinetic energy of droplets being ejected, and also increases the speed of re-fill of the channel with liquid ink following ejection.

  • Patent number: 5751315
Abstract: An ejector for a thermal ink-jet printhead includes a heating element defined on a main surface of a silicon heater chip. A cavity is disposed within the heater chip opposite the side of the heating element exposed to liquid ink. In one embodiment, the heating element is disposed on a narrow pillar which is surrounded by two elongated trenches. In another embodiment, the heating element is suspended over a cavity by narrow supports. In each case, the cavity reduces the thermal mass of the structure supporting the heating element and acts as an insulator to prevent excess heat from being dissipated into the body of the heater chip.

  • Patent number: 5744732
Abstract: A system for transporting a sheet of material including an actuator, a position sensing system, and a tactile sensor system. The actuator imparts a known force to a sheet, moving it through to the position sensing system, which measures the sheet velocity at various points. Afterward, the sheet moves through the tactile sensor system, which determines the coefficient of friction of the sheet. Given these quantities, a controller can determine the mass of the sheet, which can be used alter the performance of the sheet transport system.

  • Patent number: 5714697
Abstract: A system for measuring the mass of a sheet of material including an actuator, a position sensing system, and a tactile sensor system. The actuator imparts a known force to a sheet, moving it through to the position sensing system, which measures the sheet velocity at various points. Afterward, the sheet moves through the tactile sensor system, which determines the coefficient of friction of the sheet. Given these quantities, a controller can determine the mass of the sheet, which can be used alter the performance of a reproductive machine. A second embodiment of the mass measuring system includes an actuator, a position sensing system, and a subsystem for eliminating friction. The actuator applies a force to a sheet to move it into and through the subsystem. The position sensing system incorporated in the subsystem senses the acceleration of the sheet. Given this quantity, a controller can determine the mass of the sheet.
