Patent number: 9595363Abstract: Nanocrystals comprising organic ligands at surfaces of the plurality of nanocrystals are provided. The organic ligands are removed from the surfaces of the nanocrystals using a solution comprising a trialkyloxonium salt in a polar aprotic solvent. The removal of the organic ligands causes the nanocrystals to become naked nanocrystals with cationic surfaces.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 2013Date of Patent: March 14, 2017Assignee: The Regents of the University of CaliforniaInventors: Brett Anthony Helms, Delia Jane Milliron, Evelyn Louise Rosen, Raffaella Buonsanti, Anna Llordes

Patent number: 9341913Abstract: The embodiments described herein provide an electrochromic device. In an exemplary embodiment, the electrochromic device includes (1) a substrate and (2) a film supported by the substrate, where the film includes transparent conducting oxide (TCO) nanostructures. In a further embodiment, the electrochromic device further includes (a) an electrolyte, where the nanostructures are embedded in the electrolyte, resulting in an electrolyte, nanostructure mixture positioned above the substrate and (b) a counter electrode positioned above the mixture. In a further embodiment, the electrochromic device further includes a conductive coating deposited on the substrate between the substrate and the mixture. In a further embodiment, the electrochromic device further includes a second substrate positioned above the mixture.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 2012Date of Patent: May 17, 2016Assignee: The Regents of the University of CaliforniaInventors: Delia Milliron, Ravisubhash Tangirala, Anna Llordes, Raffaella Buonsanti, Guillermo Garcia

Patent number: 8961828Abstract: The present invention provides a method of preparing aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) nanocrystals. In an exemplary embodiment, the method includes (1) injecting a precursor mixture of a zinc precursor, an aluminum precursor, an amine, and a fatty acid in a solution of a vicinal diol in a non-coordinating solvent, thereby resulting in a reaction mixture, (2) precipitating the nanocrystals from the reaction mixture, thereby resulting in a final precipitate, and (3) dissolving the final precipitate in an apolar solvent. The present invention also provides a dispersion. In an exemplary embodiment, the dispersion includes (1) nanocrystals that are well separated from each other, where the nanocrystals are coated with surfactants and (2) an apolar solvent where the nanocrystals are suspended in the apolar solvent. The present invention also provides a film. In an exemplary embodiment, the film includes (1) a substrate and (2) nanocrystals that are evenly distributed on the substrate.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 2011Date of Patent: February 24, 2015Assignee: The Regents of the University of CaliforniaInventors: Raffaella Buonsanti, Delia J.
