  • Patent number: 11299979
Abstract: Determining distance and direction from a first borehole to a second borehole including generating a time-varying magnetic field by axially reciprocating magnets of opposed polarity, at a first location in a second borehole, and detectable in the region of the first borehole. First and second sensors positioned at an observation point in the first borehole measure the amplitude and relative phase of components of the magnetic field. From these measurements, the direction, relative to the sensors, from an observation point to the first location is determined. The distance between these points is determined by measuring amplitude variations with depth of the magnetic field at observation points in the first borehole and computing theoretical variations in the amplitude for different assumed distances between the observation points and the location of the magnetic field source which are compared with theoretical variations to determine the distance between the first and second boreholes.

  • Patent number: 7568532
Abstract: Electrically powered electromagnetic field source beacons installed in a reference well in combination with a down-hole measurement while drilling (MWD) electronic survey instrument near the drill bit in the borehole being drilled permit distance and direction measurements for drilling guidance. Each magnetic field source beacon consists of a coil of wire wound on a steel coupling between two lengths of steel tubing in the reference well, and powered by an electronic package. Control circuitry in the electronic package continuously “listens” for, and recognizes, a “start” signal that is initiated by the driller. After a “start” signal has been received, the beacon is energized for a short time interval during which an electromagnetic field is generated, which is measured by the MWD apparatus.

  • Publication number: 20060066454
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for precisely tracking a borehole using electronically controlled DC current switching in a source loop in the vicinity of the borehole together with measurements of the apparent Earth's magnetic field are disclosed. A field averaging method optimally gives the location of points in the borehole in the presence of intense magnetic noise. The expected uncertainty of these locations can be found from a method of generating an ensemble of simulated surveys using a noise characterization parameter found from apparent Earth field measurements. Time synchronization between apparent Earth field measurements and the instants of switching to positive current flow into the loop is found using a correlation method in conjunction with different time durations for positive and negative current flow in the source loop.

  • Patent number: 6466020
Abstract: An apparatus and method for surveying the path of a borehole includes two single-axis field sensors located at a radius centered at a fixed location. Guide wires are located along the earth's surface above the prescribed borehole path and the known electromagnetic field produced by current in the guide wires are detected by the sensors. Values of X and Y vectors at multiple locations on a spherical surface at the radial distance of the sensors are calculated and compared with measured values to define the location of the sensors on the spherical surface to permit the lateral spacing between the sensors and the desired borehole path to be determined.

  • Patent number: 6234259
Abstract: A directional drilling control system for a drill stem carrying a conventional drilling head includes an elongated actuator housing fixed in a borehole being drilled. The drill stem passes through the housing and is generally coaxial with it, and an actuator within the housing is selectively activated to deflect the drill stem with respect to the axis of the housing. The actuator is selectively driven to regulate the direction and amount of deflection to thereby control the direction of drilling. An electrical controller in the housing in communication with a surface controller and/or with feedback sensors in the housing controls the actuator.
