Publication number: 20070166344Abstract: Surface-active, non-leaching antimicrobial film forming compositions and methods for their application to preferably medical device surfaces are provided. The compositions form durable coatings with long-lasting antimicrobial efficacy without formation of a zone of inhibition. Optionally the films can be hydrophilic. Specific long-chain molecules of certain chemical reactivity are covalently bonded into a polymeric matrix. They maintain a long-term anti-microbial efficacy without being leached out into the aqueous environment. The polymeric matrix of the compositions contain functional groups, which covalently bond to an amine, thiol, carboxyl, aldehyde or hydroxyl active group of selected long chain quaternary ammonium compounds. Upon formation of a covalent bonding with the polymeric matrix the long chain compounds become immobilized but still maintain antimicrobial efficacy.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 18, 2006Publication date: July 19, 2007Inventors: Xin Qu, Rainer Gruening, Karen Merritt, Paul Chen, Vitaly Falevich

Patent number: 7008979Abstract: A coating composition is disclosed which comprises an aqueous polymeric matrix, a hydrophilic polymer, a colloidal metal oxide and a crosslinker. The coating composition when applied on medical devices is hydrophilic, shows improved lubricity, abrasion resistance and substrate adhesion on metallic or plastic substrates. The coating also shows improved water sheeting thus providing the coated substrates with anti-fog properties. The coating absorbs aqueous dye or stain solutions making the substrate suitable for printing.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2002Date of Patent: March 7, 2006Assignee: Hydromer, Inc.Inventors: Thomas C. Schottman, Patrick M. Hennessey, Rainer Gruening

Process for preparing iodoalkynylcarbamates having a low tendency of yellowing when exposed to light
Patent number: 5554784Abstract: A method for preparing iodoalkynylcarbamates exhibiting little or no discoloration or yellowing when incorporated into coating compositions, such as paint compositions, and exposed to sunlight. An alkynol is reacted with freshly distilled isocyanate prepared within 24 to 120 hours prior to reaction with the alkynol, and the resulting product is iodinated to form an iodoalkynylcarbamate that exhibits little or no discoloration or yellowing when incorporated into coating compositions, such as paint compositions, and exposed to ultraviolet light.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 1994Date of Patent: September 10, 1996Inventor: Rainer Gruening -
