  • Patent number: 4804157
Abstract: Fuel dumping valve for aircraft for fast emergency evacuation of fuel contained in the aircraft's fuel tanks, consisting of a valve head seated in a valve seat and mechanical or hydraulic linkage for opening or closing the valve from the pilot's seat. The valve may have hydrulically inflatable seals for completely sealing the valve against fuel leakage, and hydraulically controlled locking pins for holding the valve locked in the valve seat until deployment. An interlocking sequencing control mechanism is provided for retracting the locking pins, releasing the sealing pressure and activating the valve.

  • Patent number: 4686858
Abstract: Aircraft instrument for indicating accelerations of the aircraft movement based on the use of an optical laser interferometer. A mass is connected to one of several mirrors in the interferometer which causes the interference pattern to move up or down in response to the change in acceleration. The interferometer uses a laser beam projected onto on optical detector that senses the motion of the interference pattern and produces a corresponding electrical signal which is connected to a linear motor which in turn is linked to the same mirror but in a negative feed-back arrangement that seeks to restore the position of the interference pattern. The amplifier output is an electrical analog of the acceleration.

  • Patent number: 4665747
Abstract: Aircraft instrument for indicating air pressure, air pressure rate of change and accelerations of the aircraft movement based on the use of an optical laser interferometer. The air pressure is connected to one of several mirrors in the interferometer which causes the interference pattern to move up or down in response to the change in air pressure or acceleration. The interferometer uses a laser beam projected onto an optical detector that senses the motion of the interference pattern and produces a corresponding electrical signal which is connected to a linear motor which in turn is linked to the same mirror but in a negative feed-back arrangement that seeks to restore the position of the interference pattern. The amplifier output is an electrical analog of the atmospheric air pressure. The rate-of-climb is obtained by differentiating the amplifier output. The acceleration is produced by connecting the mirror to a mass.

  • Patent number: 4479265
Abstract: The invention is a laser microphone in which two aligned beams of laser light, of which one beam is slightly delayed in relation to the other beam of the same frequency and is reflected by an object in motion, to produce intensity variation that vary as a function of the movements of the reflecting object.

  • Patent number: 4441673
Abstract: The present Airfoil Fuel Ejection Device consists of a retractable bulkhead(s) located in the under-side of the airfoil. The retractable bulkhead(s) is actuated through a combination of rotable worm gear drive shaft, rigid rod guidance members, drive motor, gaskets and remote control mechanism acting in unison. Specific embodiments of the Airfoil Fuel Ejection Device act through levers, support members, tracks, cylinders and pistons, brackets, interior bulkheads and guides. All the embodiments embrace a retractable bulkhead(s) seated in gaskets contoured to the circumference of the bulkhead in order to allow the latter to assume a flush position with the remainder of the under-side of the airfoil during normal flight operations. In addition the gaskets in conjunction with rigid rods assure a secure closure which deters inadvertent leakage or dumping while maintaining the structural integrity of the airfoil.

  • Patent number: 4434345
Abstract: A microwave system for frost protection of fruit trees and plants which utilizes a concentrated beam of microwave energy radiated from a directional microwave antenna and directed toward trees, plants and fruits in danger of freezing. The microwave energy is absorbed in the tissues of the leaves and fruits where it is converted to heat energy. In one form the antenna is mounted atop a mast from where the beam may be directed toward selected trees or plants by means of a two axis swiveling sequencer controlled by motors and control apparatus. In another form, the antenna is mounted atop an articulated two-leg boom attached to a wheeled carriage that may be self propelled or drawn and which has controls for operating the boom and for direction the antenna.

  • Patent number: 4432516
Abstract: The present variable airfoil assembly has a fixed airfoil member with a shallow recess in the top in which an adjustable airfoil member is seated snugly, when lowered, to present a convex top surface which merges smoothly with the top surface on the fixed airfoil member in front and behind. When the adjustable airfoil member is raised, the fixed airfoil member presents a top surface below it which is continuous for most of its extent to minimize air turbulence. Reinforcing ribs on the adjustable airfoil member extend down through longitudinal gaps in the top of the fixed airfoil member and are coupled to cylinder-and-piston units for raising and lowering the adjustable airfoil member. A transverse gap extending across the top of the nose of the fixed airfoil member passes adjustable filler pieces which can extend up between the nose and the front edge of the adjustable airfoil member when the latter is raised or be retracted down to permit air to flow under the adjustable airfoil member for braking purposes.

  • Patent number: 4412105
Abstract: A microphone utilizing a laser light for conversion of acoustical sound waves to corresponding electrical signals which may, in turn, be amplified and processed for sound reproduction or recording. The microphone has a cylindrical outer housing with a plurality of circumferentially spaced openings for the entry of sound waves, a cylindrical inner housing positioned concentrically inside the outer housing, a laser for projecting laser light into the space between the outer and inner housings, and a plurality of photo detectors for receiving the sound-modulated laser light to produce electrical signals corresponding to the sound waves entering the openings in the outer housing.

  • Patent number: 4253626
Abstract: The emergency fuel dump device for aircraft is simply a trap door on the underside of the wing. The door serves as the bottom portion of the fuel tank within the wing. It is hinged at the front and fastened with a quick release at the rear. To dump all the fuel in a wing tank the quick release is activated allowing the door to swing open.

  • Patent number: 4182503
Abstract: The present variable airfoil assembly has an adjustable airfoil member pivotally mounted in the top of a fixed airfoil member for adjustment between a fully lowered position (for minimum wind resistance) and different raised positions in which it projects up above the top surface of the fixed airfoil member to control the lift and drag. A minimum clearance between the fixed and adjustable airfoil members is provided at the front end of the adjustable airfoil member over a range of its pivotal adjustments. The variable airfoil assembly is capable of increasing the lift of the airfoil, then lowering stalling speed, and it may either replace flaps or be used in conjunction with flaps. Higher cruise speeds can be achieved as well as good low speed performance.
