  • Patent number: 6500411
Abstract: Cosmetic and personal care compositions can be manufactured using the multifunctional-additive compositions of the present invention. Such an additive preferably contains one or more particulate-based thickeners, such as a smectite clay, colloidal silica, laponite, and/or alumina, and most preferably one. or more smectite clays. According to one important embodiment of the present invention, the thickener particles are co-dispersed with particles of one or more particulate UVR-filters such as titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, or SUNSPHERE (available from International Specialty Chemicals, ISP), and most preferably with the natural particulate sunscreens such as the metal oxides. Another important component of the multifunctional-additive compositions is a dispersant or surface-modifier for the foregoing particulate materials, selected from the family of polyphenolic, natural polymers such as lignosulfonates, lignins, humates, tannates, and derivatives thereof.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 5, 2002
Date of Patent: December 31, 2002
    Assignee: Amcol International Corporation
Inventors: Ashoke K. SenGupta, Ralph Spindler, Jerald W. Darlington, Jr.
  • Patent number: 6491953
Abstract: A controlled release composition comprising an adsorbent polymer, an active agent, and a release retardant is disclosed. The composition has an improved ability to release the active agent over an extended time period.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 7, 2000
Date of Patent: December 10, 2002
    Assignee: Amcol International Corporation

  • Patent number: 6020457
Abstract: Dendritic polymers containing disulfide functional groups which are essentially inert under non-reducing conditions, but which form sulfhydryl groups upon being subjected to a reducing agent are prepared by synthesizing dendritic polymers having a core with a disulfide linkage or by reacting a dendritic polymer with a molecule containing a disulfide linkage and reactive terminal groups. In one aspect of the invention, dendritic polymers having a single disulfide functional group at the core are provided. The single disulfide group at the core can be reduced to form two sulfhydryl groups to which other molecules, such as proteins, oligonucleotides, peptides, hormones, other dendritic polymers, non-dendritic polymers, etc., can be bound.

  • Patent number: 5938934
Abstract: Dendritic polymer based networks consisting of well-defined hydrophilic and oleophilic (i.e., hydrophobic) domains, are capable of performing as nanoscopic sponges for electrophilic guest moieties such as (i) inorganic and organic cations; (ii) charged or polarized molecules containing electrophilic constituent atoms or atomic groups; and (iii) other electrophilic organic, inorganic, or organometallic species. As a result of such performance, the networks yield novel nanoscopic organo-inorganic composites which contain organosilicon units as an integral part of their covalently bonded matrix.
