  • Patent number: 6239276
Abstract: This invention relates generally to para-tertiary alkyl phenyl substituted pyrimidines and triazines and the use thereof to protect against degradation by environmental forces, inclusive of ultraviolet light, actinic radiation, oxidation, moisture, atmospheric pollutants and combinations thereof. The new class of para-tertiary alkyl phenyl substituted pyrimidines and triazines includes two tertiary alkylated phenyl groups, and a resorcinol or substituted resocinol group attached to the triazine or pyrimidine ring. These materials may, under the appropriate circumstances, be bonded to formulations comprising coatings, polymers, resins, organic compounds and the like via reaction of the bondable functionality with the materials of the formulation. A method for stabilizing a material by incorporating such para-tertiary alkyl phenyl substituted pyrimidines and triazines is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6197957
Abstract: Provided is a process for preparing carbonylated derivatives of amino- and haloamino-1,3,5-triazines by contacting the 1,3,5-triazine, carbon monoxide and a metal catalyst system containing a metal promoter for promoting carbonylation, at a temperature carbon monoxide pressure and length of time sufficient to carbonylate at least a portion of the amino and/or haloamino groups of the 1,3,5-triazine. The product resulting from contacting these components is an isocyanate functional 1,3,5-triazine; however, the carbamate functional derivative can be readily produced by contacting these components in the further presence of a hydroxy compound, or by post-reacting the isocyanate functional product with such hydroxy compound.

  • Patent number: 6153672
Abstract: A process for preparing a tris-lactam crosslinking agent, tris-pyrrolidonyl triazine, from N,N',N"-tris(4-chlorobutyryl)melamine by treatment of the chlorobutyryl derivative with a base such as sodium or potassium carbonate to effect intramolecular cyclization to the tris-lactam. A curable composition comprised of tris-pyrrolidonyl triazine as the crosslinking agent and a hydroxyfunctional or aminofunctional material as a resin. Thick films with no pinholes are prepared from the curable compositions using powder coating techniques.

  • Patent number: 6063922
Abstract: Provided is a novel carbamate functional 1,3,5-triazine of the general formula ##STR1## wherein Z' is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydrocarbyl, and a group represented by the formula NHQ',each Q' is independently selected from the group consisting of a hydrocarbyl, a hydrocarbyloxy hydrocarbyl and a group represented by the formula COOY, with the proviso that at least two of the Q' groups are COOY, andeach Y is independently selected from the group consisting of a hydrocarbyl group and a hydrocarbyloxy hydrocarbyl ether group, with the proviso that at least one Y group is a hydrocarbyloxy hydrocarbyl ether group. These carbamate functional 1,3,5-triazines find use, for example, as crosslinkers or reactive modifiers in curable compositions.
