Abstract: A method and system of establishing a short-range wireless communications connection between a host device and a client device, wherein the host device includes a host certificate and a host key, the method including the steps of: transmitting an advertisement using a short-range wireless communications (SRWC) protocol from the host device to the client device; receiving a connection request message from the client device; receiving a client device verification message, wherein the client device verification message includes an encrypted client certificate, wherein the encrypted client certificate is a certificate that is encrypted using a client key; decrypting the encrypted certificate using the host key to obtain the client certificate; verifying the client certificate using the host certificate; generating a shared secret; encrypting the shared secret using the host key; and sending the encrypted shared secret to the client device.

Abstract: A method of authorizing access and operation for vehicle sharing via a portable device. A request reservation is generated to reserve a vehicle via a portable device carried by a user. The reservation includes a portable device identifier and reservation details. Authentication keys are transmitted to the portable device and a plug-in device coupled to the vehicle in response to a successful authorization. The plug-in device is used to perform vehicle access and vehicle operations of the vehicle. The authentication keys enable the portable device and the plug-in device to be paired for enabling vehicle access and operations. An authorization is executed between the portable device carried by a user and a plug-in device coupled to the vehicle. Access to the vehicle operations are enabled in response to a successful authorization.

Abstract: A system and method of regulating access to a vehicle from a wireless device communicating using short-range wireless communications includes: transmitting a vehicle access certificate signing request from the wireless device to a central facility; receiving an authenticated vehicle access certificate from the central facility in response to the vehicle access certificate signing request, wherein the authenticated vehicle access certificate is signed using a central facility private key and includes the wireless device public key; transmitting the authenticated vehicle access certificate containing the wireless device public key from the wireless device to the vehicle via a short-range wireless communications protocol; receiving from the vehicle a shared secret that is encrypted by the wireless device public key; decrypting the received shared secret using a wireless device private key; generating a command controlling vehicle functions; and transmitting the command from the wireless device to the vehicle.
