  • Patent number: 5575224
Abstract: A pulsed injection system for injecting a stream of high pressure liquid into the ground is used for distributing liquid in a turf root zone. Each nozzle of the apparatus includes one or more nozzle openings which are arranged at an angle to the vertical so that the stream generated is not vertical but instead projects outwardly from the nozzle with a partly horizontal component of direction. This direction maximizes the distance traveled through the root zone of the turf to kill maximum numbers of parasites and also, particularly when the number of openings per nozzle is increased to four provides a maximum blanket of the injected liquid in an expansion zone of each jet with minimum spaces between the expansion zone and maximum coverage. This blanket is used particularly with herbicide injection to prevent weeds growing through the herbicide into the turf.

  • Patent number: 4907516
Abstract: Fertilizer or other liquid crop treatment is applied to the ground using a direct injection jet with a nozzle position closely adjacent the ground and forming a jet of the liquid directed into the ground. A solenoid controlled valve cyclically halts the flow of fluid to form short pulses of the fluid so that the fluid can be supplied in concentrate form while generating sufficient energy to achieve a depth of penetration in the range 2 to 4 inches. The solenoid controlled valve and nozzle is mounted on a skid member carried on a depth control wheel. The period of the pulses is arranged so that the length of a pulse is very short relative to the spacing between the pulses with the spacing between adjacent rows formed by adjacent heads being substantially equal to the spacing between the individual pulses.

  • Patent number: 4905897
Abstract: A field sprayer nozzle monitor comprises a sensor head in the form of an L-shaped horn device which is clamped onto the nozzle cap by way of a slot which receives the fin of the nozzle cap. The horn includes a mouth which receives sound from the spray nozzle and transmits it to a microphone protected with the horn. A central processor unit receives signals from each of the sensors in turn and processes those to compare with a predetermined calibration signal to determine which nozzles are blocked or faulty. The selection between two different frequencies can be made for different nozzle types. A dynamic averaging system is used to accommodate changes which take place at all nozzles which are independent of fault at the nozzle.

  • Patent number: 4646971
Abstract: A field sprayer has a pair of outwardly extending booms each formed by an enclosure having an upper wall of inverted V-shape with an airfoil at the apex for re-directing air rising on one side down the other side to avoid turbulence. The enclosure on the leeside thereof supports a plurality of jet nozzles which project through an opening in the enclosure. A front wall depending downwardly from the front edge is formed of two parallel flexible layers with vertical staggered slits whereby it can flex rearwardly as the enclosure moves forwardly by contacting the plants. The jet is directed to a position immediately behind the rear edge of the front wall in flexed position so as to engage the plants when bent forwardly. Ground wheels are arranged at the outer ends of the booms and a single central pivot supports the inner ends for movement to a trailing transport position.
