  • Publication number: 20060257204
Abstract: A marker for indicating boundaries or delineating traffic lanes in pavement such as roadways or airport runways is described. In an embodiment, the marker includes a high-strength plastic housing containing at least one retroreflective reflector, a light emitting diode (LED), at least one solar collector and a rechargeable battery. The retroreflective reflectors reflect light back to a light source, such as the headlights of a vehicle on a roadway or the light of an airplane on a runway. The LED can provide a light source that can be seen from greater viewing angles than the light reflected by the reflectors providing better visibility to operators of vehicles on curved roadways and allowing captains of airplanes to see the markers from the cockpit at closer range than if the markers used reflectors alone. In an embodiment, the marker also can include circuitry that controls the operation of the LED, the flow of current through the circuit and the charging of the battery.

  • Patent number: 6435459
Abstract: A wayside signal for a railway includes a plurality of light emitting diodes housed in a housing. The light emitting diodes output indication signals. Further, the light emitting diodes are configured on a first circuit board which is thermally coupled to the housing. The housing may also include heat sink fins to dissipate heat generated by the light emitting diodes and associated driving circuitry for driving the light emitting diodes also contained within the housing. An additional light emitting diode may also be contained within the housing to point in an opposite direction than the indication signal light emitting diodes, which additional light emitting diode may be formed on a second circuit board with the driving circuitry. The additional light emitting diode provides an indication to anyone behind the wayside signal as to the indication of the wayside signal. The wayside signal is further optimized for thermal efficiency and to be sealed against the elements.

  • Patent number: 6425678
Abstract: An obstruction lamp which replaces conventional incandescent light bulbs and which utilizes light emitting diodes (LEDs) in an illumination unit. The obstruction lamp includes a first plurality of LEDs connected in series. The first plurality of LEDs are mounted onto a metal vertical cylinder which provides a heat sinking for the first plurality of LEDs. A lens is configured to cover the first plurality of LEDs and the metal vertical cylinder. A metal base is provided on which the first plurality of LEDs, the metal vertical cylinder, and the lens are mounted. Further, a clamp is configured to seal the lens to the metal base. A second plurality of LEDs may be connected electrically independently of the first plurality of LEDs and may be mounted on top of the metal vertical cylinder. A wire housing may be configured to attach to the metal base and to provide electrical connection to the first and/or second plurality of LEDs.
