  • Publication number: 20020133757
Abstract: A system and method of monitoring and analyzing the performance of a computer system and its components in a data processing network and for proposing changes to the network to improve the performance. The system involves identifying undesirable conditions (sometimes called bottlenecks) in the system, determining which bottlenecks are the most severe in affecting the performance of the system and in proposing changes to the components of the system to improve performance of the network. The present invention uses historical data and forecasting techniques to predict bottlenecks which have not occurred yet but which can be expected, so that future bottlenecks can be projected, along with a prediction interval to indicate the confidence of the prediction. The future projections and the prediction interval are provided in a graph which is available to the user over the Internet, if desired, using HTML and hot links.

  • Patent number: 6434613
Abstract: A system and method of monitoring and analyzing the performance of a server and its components in a data processing network and for proposing changes to the network to improve the performance. The system involves identifying bottlenecks in the system, determining which bottlenecks are the most severe in affecting the performance of the system and in proposing changes to the components of the system to improve performance of the network. Identification of latent bottlenecks caused by fixing other bottlenecks and creating a more efficient system is a part of the present invention, using a second, lower threshold for identifying latent bottleneck when a realized bottleneck has also been identified in a system.

  • Publication number: 20020070937
Abstract: A system and method for graphically displaying data from a plurality of selected data sets on a computer system including a display is disclosed. Each selected data set has a plurality of values corresponding to a plurality of parameter values. The method and system include determining a plurality of average values for a plurality of intervals. The plurality of average values are determined for each selected data set. Each of the plurality of average values is determined from a portion of the plurality of values. The portion of the plurality of values correspond to an interval of the plurality of intervals. Each of the plurality of intervals includes a portion of the plurality of parameter values. The method and system further include plotting the average value for each of the plurality of intervals on the display for each selected data set. The average value is depicted as a first symbol.

  • Publication number: 20010021936
Abstract: A method and system for reducing an amount of horizontal space required when displaying a plurality of columns on a display screen is disclosed. The at least one column of the plurality of columns has at least one entry containing text data. The method and system include obtaining the at least one entry from the at least one column, and abbreviating a width of the at least one entry, determining if there is another entry containing text data. The method and system further include repeating the steps of obtaining the at least one entry, abbreviating the at least one entry and determining if there is another entry until all of the at least one entries are abbreviated. The method and system further include displaying the at least one column having the at least one abbreviated entry.

  • Patent number: 6191785
Abstract: A method and system for dynamically manipulating values associated with graphical elements displayed within a graphic interface of a data-processing system. Initially a pointer element associated with a pointing device is displayed within the graphic interface, such that the pointer element is capable of movement in multiple directions in response to movement of the pointing device. A trackslide element and a moveable slider are displayed within the graphic interface. The moveable slider permits users to dynamically decrease or increase values associated with the trackslide element, such that the moveable slider is constrained to move only in a first direction along the trackslide element. The pointer element is then graphically attached to the moveable slider.

  • Patent number: 6144379
Abstract: A computer managed communication network with user interactive access via a plurality of display terminals and including a plurality of linked network objects with a system for managing said network in which values of a selected parameter are sensed respectively for each of a plurality of selected objects and stored. The stored data is presented in a graph display including a plurality of icons, each icon representing aspects of said values with respect to one of said selected objects. User interactive means for selecting one of said icons are provided together with means responsive to said selecting means for graphically presenting other aspects of said values. In the monitoring of networks, the invention may be used to track network servers which are monitored via a distribution graph in which icons representative of servers are linked to more detailed line graphs of such servers showing the changes in parameter values versus a time line parameter.

  • Patent number: 6088030
Abstract: Described is a mapping function and Graphic User Interface (GUI) for use in an interactive computer system. The GUI is generated by a computer program and includes a view of events or objects associated icons and graphical representations of the objects. A different symbol is overlaid on each icon and a common symbol is overlaid on the graph that relates to the object and associated icon. Consequently, mapping is provided between the objects and graph lines and a viewer can easily associate an object with its associated graph.

  • Patent number: 6075537
Abstract: A data processor controlled user interactive display system for displaying hypertext documents, each including a sequence of display screen pages received over a communications network such as the World Wide Web. Each of the pages contains a plurality of hotspots of varying dimensions, each of said hotspots being responsive to user interactive pointing means to display a linked document. The system has means for determining the dimensions and positions of said hotspots on said display page and means responsive to said determining means for dynamically creating a plurality of expanded hotspot zones, each respectively including one of said hotspots. The system then provides means responsive to said user interactive pointing means within a selected hotspot zone to display the document linked to the hotspot in said zone. These hotspot zones are highlighted when the user points to them to provide the user with a large and highly visible target zone within which he may access his selected hotspot.

  • Patent number: 5818446
Abstract: The computer is enhanced to include software processes for detecting the contents of data to be displayed and, responsive thereto, for changing the user interface selected for display and use. These processes determine which of a plurality of possible user interfaces shall be loaded into the computer memory for employment on the display for user interaction therewith so that, for example, functionally rich user interfaces will be employed for adult use of a given data load, but simplified user interfaces may be employed for the same data when a child desires to use the system. The entire user interface is changed based on data type or content as compared with a register of desired user interfaces for differing types or contents of data to be displayed.
