  • Publication number: 20200149397
Abstract: An improved rotating cutting bit used in a road resurfacing machine, wherein the cutting bit includes a metal shank and having a forward end, and wherein the forward end includes a bore or recess that is adapted to fixedly receive at least a portion of a point attack insert. The improvement comprises a head section; an axially aligned transitional intermediate section contiguous with the head section having a first diameter, d, and a sectional height, H1; and an axially aligned base section adjacent to the intermediate section having a second diameter, D; wherein d:H1 is greater than 1.0, the ratio of d:D is from 0.62 to 0.68, wherein the point attack insert has an overall height H and the ratio of H:D is less than 0.93.

  • Patent number: 9074471
Abstract: A non-rotatable cutter bit for mining and construction operations having a central longitudinal axis extending therethrough includes an insert at one end. The insert has a central longitudinal axis and the apex is offset from the central longitudinal axis to provide an elongated rake face. With the insert mounted within the cutter body, the central longitudinal axis of the cutter body intersects with the apex such that the cutter body may be easily exchanged with conventional cutter bodies. The insert may also be mounted directly to the body without using an insert holder. The insert also has applications in oil and gas drilling operations.

  • Publication number: 20130026810
Abstract: A cutting tool assembly for use in impinging earth strata includes a holder containing a bore having an axial forward end, and the holder having a forward surface surrounding the bore at the axial forward end of the bore. The assembly also includes a cutting tool being rotatably contained within the bore of the holder, and the cutting tool having a rearwardly facing shoulder. The assembly further includes a protective member positionable between the cutting tool and the holder. The protective member has a first surface adjacent the rearwardly facing shoulder of the cutting tool and a second surface adjacent to the forward surface of the holder, wherein the first surface has a first hardness that is greater than a second hardness of the second surface. In one aspect, the second surface of the protective member is in direct contact with the forward surface of the holder. In another aspect, the first surface of the protective member is in direct contact with the rearwardly facing shoulder of the cutting tool.

  • Publication number: 20120242136
Abstract: A cutting tool for use in impinging earth strata includes a cutting tool body having a head portion at an axial forward end, a collar portion axially rearward of the head portion, and a shank portion axially rearward of the collar portion at an axial rearward end, wherein the cutting tool body contains a first socket at the axial forward end thereof. The shank portion generally tapers in the axial rearward direction. The cutting tool also includes a hard cutting member affixed to the cutting tool body within the first socket. The hard cutting member includes an axial forward end and an axial rearward end. The hard cutting member also includes a superhard axial forward portion of the axial forward end thereof, wherein the superhard axial forward portion comprises a substrate and a layer of superhard material adhered to the substrate.
