  • Patent number: 6474176
Abstract: A fluid flow device for determining fluid flow rates in soils includes a conduit for receiving a fluid. The conduit has a reduced channel portion to form a reduced channel portion which amplifies the fluid flow rate of the fluid. A sensor device is coupled in sensing relation relative to the conduit and configured for measuring the amplified fluid flow rate as the fluid flows through the reduced channel portion.

  • Patent number: 6191851
Abstract: The present invention is an apparatus and method for calibrating a downward viewing image acquisition system. The apparatus comprises a calibration panel with calibrative material of known reflectivity. The calibrative material coats the panel surface or is pulled across its surface or pulled across its frame so as to maintain a consistent reflectivity and/or emissivity. A housing is provided which protects the calibration panel from the deteriorative effects of natural elements. The housing alternately exposes the calibration panel to the downward viewing image acquisition system as a calibration exposure and covers the calibration panel after the calibration exposure.

  • Patent number: 4899047
Abstract: Oil is detected in the presence of water by placing a translucent, porous body of hydrophobic material in contact with the oil and water and detecting the amount by which light incident on the body is attenuated on propagation through the body.

  • Patent number: 4634856
Abstract: A method and apparatus for sensing moisture changes by utilizing optical fiber technology. One embodiment uses a reflective target at the end of an optical fiber. The reflectance of the target varies with its moisture content and can be detected by a remote unit at the opposite end of the fiber. A second embodiment utilizes changes in light loss along the fiber length. This can be attributed to changes in reflectance of cladding material as a function of its moisture content. It can also be affected by holes or inserts interposed in the cladding material and/or fiber. Changing light levels can also be coupled from one fiber to another in an assembly of fibers as a function of varying moisture content in their overlapping lengths of cladding material.
