  • Patent number: 11472136
Abstract: A carrier film set configured to apply a number of stiffener assemblies to a layup mandrel, the carrier film set comprising: a number of alignment features configured to align the carrier film set relative to the layup mandrel; and a number of indexing features configured to index the number of stiffener assemblies onto the carrier film set.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 17, 2019
Date of Patent: October 18, 2022
    Assignee: The Boeing Company
Inventors: Samuel James Knutson, Brian Timothy Peters, Raviendra Suriyaarachchi, James R. Kendall, Paul D. Shaw
  • Patent number: 11220353
Abstract: A method of fabricating a composite structure is presented. The method comprises laying up a plurality of composite plies over a layup mandrel; positioning a first caul plate and a second caul plate over the plurality of composite plies, leaving composite material exposed; removing at least part of the composite material exposed between the first caul plate and the second caul plate to separate a first composite section from a second composite section; curing the first composite section and the second composite section to form a first composite part and a second composite part; and removing the first composite part and the second composite part from the layup mandrel immediately following curing.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 18, 2019
Date of Patent: January 11, 2022
    Assignee: The Boeing Company
Inventors: Samuel James Knutson, Brian Timothy Peters, Brian Bentley Reid, Byron James Autry, Raviendra Suriyaarachchi, James R. Kendall

  • Patent number: 10059041
Abstract: Within examples, methods and systems for a multi-state bladder or elastomeric apparatus for manufacture of composite material are provided. The elastomeric apparatus includes a housing having a flexible surface state and a rigid surface state, a rod within the housing extending along a length of the housing, and a plurality of components mounted to the rod, such that in an engaged position of the rod the plurality of components cause the housing to have the rigid surface state, and in a disengaged position of the rod the plurality of components enable the housing to have the flexible surface state.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 10, 2015

  • Patent number: 9827720
Abstract: Within examples, methods and systems for a multi-state bladder or elastomeric apparatus for manufacture of composite material are provided. In one example, the elastomeric apparatus comprises an elastomer housing, and magnetic components within the elastomer housing such that application of a magnetic field to the elastomer apparatus changes a rigidity state of the elastomer housing to a secondary state. The secondary state is supportive of a surface compaction applied to the elastomer housing. The elastomeric apparatus may also include rods within the housing extending along the housing, and the magnetic components are mounted to the rods in a rotatable manner. The magnetic components can react to a magnetic field in a way that aligns the magnetic components by rotating on the rods to cause the housing to have a rigid surface state, and to cause the housing to have a flexible surface state in absence of the magnetic field.
